Chapter 2 - The Unopened Envelope

The silence in the living room was heavy, broken only by the static of police radios outside. Ethan stared at the white envelope in his trembling hands.
FOR ETHAN—ONLY WHEN HE IS READY.
“Do you want me to read it to you?” Detective Olivia Grant asked, her voice steady and grounding.
Ethan shook his head. He slid his thumb under the flap and tore it open. Inside was a single sheet of heavy, lined paper. The handwriting was neat, sloping, and unmistakably Rachel’s.
Dear Ethan,
If you are reading this, it means you found the papers in my bag. I wanted to tell you myself, but I know you aren't ready to talk to me yet. I need you to know one thing: I am not trying to replace your mother. No one ever could. She gave you your laugh, your eyes, and the first years of your life. I have kept every photo of her safe. They aren't gone; they are in a memory box in my closet, waiting for you whenever you want to see them again.
The adoption isn't about erasing her. It’s a promise to you. It’s my legal promise that no matter what happens, no matter how hard things get, I will never leave you. When the new baby comes, my heart won’t divide—it will just grow bigger. I love you, Ethan. I just wanted you to know that.
Tears, hot and sudden, spilled over Ethan’s cheeks. He dropped the letter. For six months, his grandmother had whispered poison into his ear. She’s taking over. She’s throwing away your past. You won’t matter when the baby arrives.
Every note in his lunchbox, every gentle smile, every time she stepped back to give him space—it hadn’t been rejection. It had been patience.
Headlights flashed across the living room window. Tires screeched in the driveway. A moment later, the front door flew open, and Mark Cole burst into the house, his work uniform stained with grease, his face pale with terror.
“Where is she?” Mark demanded, his eyes darting frantically. “Where’s my son?”
Ethan ran to his father, burying his face in Mark's heavy canvas jacket. Mark fell to his knees, wrapping his arms around the boy.

“I’m here, buddy,” Mark choked out. “I’m here. What happened?”
Olivia stepped forward, holding the plastic evidence bag containing the silver spoon. “Mr. Cole, we need to get to the hospital. But first, we need to talk about your mother, Linda.”
