Chapter 10 - The Completed Frame

A year later.
The backyard of the Cole house was decorated with pink and white balloons. A banner hung between two oak trees that read: HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY, LILY!
The yard was filled with friends, neighbors, and laughter. The shadow of Linda—who was now serving a lengthy sentence in a state facility—was completely gone from their lives. The house felt lighter, brighter, and entirely whole.
Ethan, now ten years old, ran across the grass holding a small, frosting-covered cupcake.
“Lily!” he called out.
Rachel was sitting on a picnic blanket, helping the one-year-old girl balance on her wobbly legs. When Lily saw Ethan, she shrieked with delight, her little arms reaching out for her big brother. Ethan dropped to his knees and handed her a tiny piece of the cupcake, laughing as she smeared frosting all over her nose.
Mark walked over, carrying a camera. “Alright, everyone! Picture time!”
Rachel shifted on the blanket, pulling Lily onto her lap, and patted the space beside her. “Come on, Ethan. Get in here.”
Ethan sat down, leaning his head against Rachel’s shoulder. As Mark set the timer on the camera and sprinted over to join them, Ethan looked up at the sky, feeling a deep, unshakeable sense of peace. His heart was big enough for two mothers, and his life was exactly as it was meant to be.
