Chapter 8 - Shadows Banished

Three days later, the rain had completely cleared, leaving behind a crisp, cool autumn afternoon.
At the county courthouse, the legal storm following the events at Larkspur Ridge Road reached its swift conclusion. Arthur—whose real name was uncovered by federal investigators to be Arthur Pendelton, a former disgraced medical technician—lay under heavy armed guard in the secure psychiatric wing of the state penitentiary.
The investigation revealed the full extent of his dark history. After stealing baby Chloe from the hospital in 2007, he had erased his identity, living entirely off the grid. When Chloe grew into a young woman and attempted to escape, his obsession turned to her unborn child—a sick cycle he intended to repeat.
Because of the physical evidence recovered from the burned house by arson investigators, along with the detailed testimony of Rowan, Dax, and Kira, Arthur was indicted on multiple federal charges, including aggravated kidnapping, attempted murder, arson, and child endangerment. He would spend the remainder of his natural life behind bars, ensuring he would never threaten another soul.
That afternoon, Rowan sat on the back bumper of Medic 43 outside Station 43. The ambulance had been repaired, its side panel repainted, gleaming red and white under the autumn sun.
Dax limped over on his crutches, leaning against the vehicle beside her. He held two ice-cold sodas, handing one to Rowan.
"How’s the leg?" Rowan asked, popping the tab on her can.
"Doctor says I’ll be back on full duty in three weeks," Dax smiled, taking a sip. "My wife is already sick of me sitting on the couch."
Kira walked out of the bay doors, holding a large manila envelope. "Look what just arrived from the hospital."
She pulled out a photograph. It was a professional newborn portrait taken in the Saint Jude’s nursery. The baby was wrapped in a bright yellow blanket, sleeping peacefully. On the back of the photo, written in neat, elegant handwriting, was a message:
To Rowan, Dax, and Kira—
You didn't just save my life and my son's life in that dark basement. You gave me back my family, my name, and my future.
Meet tiny Rowan Arthur Vance—named in honor of the woman who taught me how to fight, and given the middle name Arthur to remind me that light always overcomes the darkest names.
With all my love, Chloe & Baby Rowan
Rowan traced her thumb over the photograph, a lump forming in her throat. She looked up at her crew—at Dax, who had put his body between a gun and a stranger; at Kira, who had held steady when everything was falling apart.

"We did good," Kira said softly, a genuine, radiant smile illuminating her face.
"Yeah," Rowan agreed, looking up at the clear blue sky overhead. "We did."
