Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Larkspur

One year later.
The property on Larkspur Ridge Road, where the dark, decaying farmhouse had once stood, had undergone a complete transformation.
The burned ruins and the terrifying basement had been entirely excavated and removed by the county. In its place, surrounded by towering pines and green meadows, stood a beautiful, modern wooden park structure—the Chloe Vance Wildlife Preserve and Sanctuary.
It was a sanctuary dedicated to helping young women recovering from trauma, providing them with housing, education, and medical care—a place built from the ashes of evil to bring light to generations to come.
On a warm summer evening, Medic 43 sat parked at the overlook near the entrance of the preserve.
Rowan sat on the hood of the ambulance, watching the sunset cast long hues of purple, orange, and gold across the tree canopy. Dax was sitting beside her, tossing peanuts to a squirrel on the fence post, while Kira sat in the driver's seat, listening to the quiet crackle of the dispatch radio.
A car pulled up near the overlook.
Chloe stepped out, holding the hand of a toddler who was now walking on steady, chubby legs. Baby Rowan was fourteen months old now, wearing a tiny red t-shirt with a yellow firefighter badge printed on the front.
"Look who wanted to say goodnight to his godmother!" Chloe called out with a laugh.
Little Rowan broke free from his mother’s hand, toddling as fast as his legs could carry him toward the ambulance. "Ro-Ro! Ro-Ro!" he babbled happily.
Rowan laughed, sliding off the hood of the ambulance and catching the little boy in her arms, lifting him high into the air. He squealed with delight, his golden curls bouncing in the evening breeze.
"Look at you, big guy!" Dax cheered, giving the toddler a high-five. "You're getting fast! Soon you'll be driving the rig!"
Chloe walked over, resting her arm comfortably against the side of the ambulance. She looked out over the sunlit valley, her heart completely at peace.
"It's beautiful out here now," Chloe said softly. "Sometimes I come up here just to look at the trees. I used to hate this road. Now... now it just feels like the place where my life finally began."
"It’s a good place," Rowan agreed, holding little Rowan on her hip as the toddler played with her stethoscope. "A place of fresh starts."
Suddenly, the dispatch radio inside Medic 43 broke the quiet evening atmosphere with a loud chime.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.
"Medic 43, respond to a minor traffic accident on Highway 9, non-injury, patient requesting evaluation."
Kira leaned out the window, smiling. "Duty calls, Cap."
Rowan gently set little Rowan back down on his feet beside Chloe. She knelt down, pressing a soft kiss to the boy's forehead, then looked up at Chloe.
"Stay safe, Chloe," Rowan smiled.
"Always," Chloe replied, waving. "Go save some lives."
Rowan, Dax, and Kira climbed into Medic 43. Dax fired up the diesel engine, the familiar, comforting thrum echoing through the quiet woods. As the ambulance turned onto Larkspur Ridge Road, Dax turned on the flashing emergency lights—not in panic or fear, but as a bright, guiding beacon cutting through the twilight.

Rowan looked out the passenger window, watching Chloe and little Rowan wave goodbye under the golden sky until they faded into the distance.
There was no darkness left on Larkspur Ridge. Only light, life, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.
