Chapter 7 - Trap at the Hospital Threshold

What happened next on the live monitors was a blur of swift, tactical precision.

The two undercover waiters dropped their silver trays, the loud clatter echoing through the high-ceilinged ballroom. "Police! Nobody move! Stay where you are!"

Panicked screams erupted from the surrounding guests as uniformed officers rushed in through the glass terrace doors. Marcus Sterling immediately threw his hands up, backing away from the table and raising his palms in surrender. "I didn't know! I have no part in this!" he yelled.

Richard Moore’s face transformed into a mask of pure rage and panic. He grabbed the leather folder with one hand, shoved Sarah Vance violently into the path of the advancing officers, and sprinted toward the rear service exit behind the bar.

"Suspect is fleeing through the kitchen corridor!" an officer shouted over the comms.

"Block the perimeter!" Miller yelled, slamming his hand against the van door and bursting out into the rain. "Claire, stay in the vehicle with the child!"

"Wait!" I shouted, but Miller was already running toward the yacht club entrance with three armed officers trailing behind him.

Inside the van, the driver—a young officer named Ramirez—locked the doors and kept his hand near his holster, keeping a sharp eye on the rain-slicked parking lot.

"Is the bad man getting away, Mommy?" Lily asked softly, her eyes wide as she looked at the chaotic scene playing out on the monitor.

"No, sweetie. The police will catch him," I assured her, though my own chest was tight with anxiety.

On the screen, we watched the feed from an officer pursuing Richard down a stainless-steel kitchen hallway. Pots and pans crashed to the floor as Richard shoved kitchen staff out of his way. He kicked open a heavy red exit door and burst into the rear alleyway behind the venue.

"He's in the alley! Moving west toward the marina docks!" the radio crackled.

Suddenly, a dark SUV parked in the shadows of the alleyway engine roared to life. The headlights flashed on, blinding the body camera lens for a second.

"He had a getaway driver waiting!" Ramirez exclaimed from the front seat of our van.

The dark SUV accelerated down the narrow alleyway, smashing through wooden trash pallets and bursting out onto the main street—heading directly toward the road where our command van was parked!

"Hang on!" Officer Ramirez yelled, throwing our heavy armored van into gear and swinging the vehicle around to block the narrow exit lane of the parking lot.

The dark SUV slammed on its brakes, tires screeching wildly against the wet asphalt, coming to a halt less than twenty feet from our front bumper. Through the rain-streaked windshield of the SUV, I saw him clearly for the first time: Richard Moore.

His hair was disheveled, his eyes wild and cornered. He looked like a rabid animal trapped in a corner.

He stared through the rain directly into our van. Through the reinforced glass, his eyes locked onto mine, and then drifted down to Lily sitting beside me. A sickening, hateful sneer formed across his lips. He put his vehicle into reverse, intending to ram his way backward through the police cruisers blocking the other end of the street.

"You're not going anywhere, Richard," Arthur Pendelton muttered grimly from beside me.

Two heavy police cruisers sped up from behind the SUV, boxing it in completely. Armed officers poured out of the vehicles, guns drawn, surrounding the trapped car.

"Richard Moore! Step out of the vehicle with your hands up! Step out NOW!" Detective Miller's voice boomed through a megaphone.

For five agonizing seconds, nobody moved. The rain lashed down relentlessly, reflecting the flashing red and blue lights of a dozen police cars against the wet pavement.

Slowly, the driver's side door of the SUV clicked open.
