Chapter 5 - A Daughter's Courage

My hands shook so violently that the phone almost slipped from my fingers. I instantly pulled Lily closer, wrapping my arm around her shoulder as if my frail body could shield her from the hidden threats outside.

"Claire? What is it?" Evelyn asked, noticing the sudden drain of color from my face.

"Someone... someone sent me a photo of Lily," I stammered, showing the screen to the hospital guard standing near the door. The guard's expression immediately hardened. He reached for his radio and called for instant backup.

Within ten minutes, Detective Miller and two additional officers were in the room. The hospital went into an elevated security posture. Every entry point was manned, and plainclothes officers were stationed outside our door and at the building perimeters.

"It's Richard," Miller said, inspecting the text metadata. "He's desperate. He knows the police are closing in, and he's trying to intimidate you into pulling Lily's statement. Without her eyewitness account of hearing the specific dialogue regarding the forced signature, his lawyers could potentially argue the mislabeled bottle was merely a tragic hospital pharmacy error."

"He's threatening my child!" I shouted, the maternal fury inside me overpowering the dull pain of my surgical wound. "I don't care about the legal case, Detective! I want my daughter safe!"

"Mommy, I'm not scared," Lily said, looking up at me with surprisingly calm brown eyes.

I looked down at her, astonished. "Lily, baby..."

"Grandma Evie said we have to be brave when bad people try to take things that aren't theirs," Lily said firmly, holding up a small folded paper crane she had crafted from a napkin while we were waiting. "The bad nurse and the mean man want to hurt Grandma Evie and take her birds. I won't let them."

Evelyn reached out, her eyes shining with pride and emotion. "She has the heart of a lion, Claire. Just like you."

Detective Miller kneeled beside Lily. "Lily, you are very brave. But I need you to help us stop them once and for all. Can you remember anything else about the man you saw speaking to Nurse Vance? Did he have anything in his hands? A bag? A notebook?"

Lily closed her eyes, concentrating hard. Her little forehead wrinkled in deep thought. "He had a big black leather book with gold letters on it. And... he had a blue ribbon on his wrist."

Miller frowned. "A blue ribbon?"

"Like the ones people wear at the dock!" Lily exclaimed. "When Daddy took me to see the boats last summer, the man at the gate put a blue ribbon around his wrist so he could go into the VIP house."

Miller’s eyes lit up. "The Grand Harbor Yacht Club! It's hosting the annual private investor gala tonight. That’s where the high-end commercial developers gather!"

"He's going to meet the buyers tonight," Evelyn realized, sitting upright. "He's going to present the stolen deeds and the forged authorization at the gala, get his advance deposit in cash or offshore transfer, and flee the country before the warrants are processed nationwide!"

"We have two hours before the gala starts," Miller said, standing up and pulling out his radio. "If he attempts to execute those documents tonight, we can catch him red-handed in front of dozens of witnesses. But we need to establish that the documents he presents are fraudulent on the spot."

"Take Arthur Pendelton with you," Evelyn declared, her voice ringing with authority. "He has my power of attorney and the real legal title. And take the police report."

"I'm coming too," I said, attempting to stand from my wheelchair.

"Claire, no, you're recovering from surgery—" Evelyn began.

"My daughter was threatened," I said, looking Miller straight in the eye. "I am not sitting in this hospital room while the man who threatened her is hunted down. I'm coming with the police."

Miller looked at my determined face, then down at Lily, who was holding my hand tightly. "You stay in the police command van outside the venue, Mrs. Stevens. Under strict guard. Is that understood?"

"Understood," I agreed.
