Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Thread

The rain began to fall heavy and dark across the city as the police convoy rolled toward the waterfront district. I sat in the back of the armored mobile command center, cradling Lily against my side. Beside us sat Arthur Pendelton, Evelyn’s sharp-eyed, gray-haired attorney, who was carefully organizing a stack of legal affidavits inside a steel briefcase.
"Richard was always arrogant," Arthur said softly, watching the rain streak down the blacked-out van windows. "He believed he was smarter than everyone in the room. He assumed Evelyn was just an old, lonely woman who wouldn't notice a few missing papers, and he assumed the hospital staff wouldn't catch a altered medication protocol."
"He underestimated a six-year-old girl," I replied, pressing a soft kiss to Lily's head. Lily was drawing pictures of paper cranes on a notepad provided by one of the officers.
"Indeed," Arthur smiled gently. "In my forty years of practicing law, I have never seen a child alter the course of an international estate fraud case. Lily didn't just save Evelyn's life; she saved hundreds of acres of pristine wetlands from being turned into concrete."
Detective Miller, who was sitting in the front passenger seat communicating through a headset, turned back to look at us. "Units are in position around the Grand Harbor Yacht Club. Surveillance confirms Richard Moore entered the VIP lounge twenty minutes ago. He is currently sitting at a private table with Marcus Sterling—the lead developer for Sterling Global Holdings."
"Is Nurse Sarah Vance with him?" I asked.
"No sign of Vance yet," Miller said. "We suspect she's hiding out at a safehouse, waiting for Richard to bring her share of the money after the deal is struck."
"What's the plan, Detective?" Arthur asked, adjusting his glasses.
"Sterling's security team is cooperative," Miller explained. "They don't want their firm tied to a murder investigation and land fraud scandal. They've allowed two of our undercover officers into the lounge dressed as catering staff. The moment Richard produces the forged authorization forms and accepts any form of payment or earnest agreement, our team moves in."
"What about the text message sent to my phone?" I asked. "Can you prove he sent it?"
"We traced the burner phone ping to a cell tower right next to the hospital parking garage at 8:15 AM," Miller confirmed. "And we found security camera footage from a coffee shop nearby showing Richard buying that exact burner phone an hour earlier. We have him tied directly to the extortion threat."
Suddenly, the radio on Miller’s shoulder crackled to life.
"Command, this is Undercover One. We have a situation. A second individual just approached Richard Moore's table. Female, mid-thirties, wearing a rain jacket and neon green footwear under her trousers."
My heart leaped into my throat. "Sarah Vance," I whispered.
"She looks panicked," the voice over the radio continued. "She's arguing with Moore. She’s demanding her payment now. She says the police were at her apartment."
"He brought her there because she threatened to betray him," Arthur deduced quickly. "He needed to keep her under his thumb until the deal was closed."
"Attention all units," Miller barked into his headset. "Suspects may attempt to break early. Undercover teams, hold positions until the transaction documents are displayed on the table. Do not let them leave the main hall!"
Inside the van, the air felt suffocatingly tense. On the multi-screen monitor mounted on the van wall, we could see live feeds from the body cameras worn by the undercover officers inside the glamorous, crystal-chandeliered ballroom of the yacht club.
Through the crowd of tuxedo-clad investors and waiter trays holding champagne glasses, the camera zoomed in on a corner table. Richard Moore, wearing a sharp navy suit, was forcefully holding the wrist of a nervous woman in a dark coat—Nurse Sarah Vance. On the glass tabletop between them and an older man in a tailored suit sat a thick black leather folder.
"That's the folder!" Lily pointed at the screen, her voice loud in the small van space. "The black book with gold letters!"
"That's it," Arthur confirmed. "That holds the fake grant deed."
On the screen, we watched as Richard opened the folder, pulling out a set of crisp white documents with bright red notary seals. He slid a pen across the table toward Marcus Sterling, the developer.

"He's signing," the undercover officer's voice whispered through the comms. "Sterling is pulling out a cashier's check. Transaction is occurring."
"Move in!" Miller ordered into his mic. "All units, execute!"
