Chapter 8 - Healing the Past

With the board battle behind us, life became a peaceful, beautiful journey.

One Saturday afternoon, a year after that fateful freezing night, there was a knock at my door. When I opened it, I found a courier holding a legal document.

It was the final settlement from the lawsuit against Marcus.

Because of his attempts to hide his income and his deliberate sabotage of my employment, the court had awarded me a substantial lump-sum payment of back child support, along with full, sole legal and physical custody of Sophie. Marcus had signed away all his parental rights to avoid further jail time for tax evasion, which the investigation had uncovered.

He was out of our lives forever, completely powerless to ever touch us again.

I sat on the living room rug, holding the document, tears of relief streaming down my face. Sophie, who was now walking and talking in adorable, half-formed words, toddled over and pressed a toy rabbit into my lap.

"Mama happy?" she asked, her big brown eyes filled with concern.

"Very happy, sweetie," I said, pulling her into a tight hug.

Ethan walked into the room, having just arrived for our weekend dinner. He saw the papers on the floor and my tear-stained face, and his expression instantly softened. He sat down on the rug beside us, wrapping his strong arms around both of us.

"It's over, Clara," he whispered, pressing a kiss to my temple. "You're completely free."

"We're free," I corrected, looking at him. "We did this together."

"I have something for you," Ethan said, his voice suddenly nervous. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

My breath hitched.

"Clara, when I walked into your apartment a year ago, I was a man who had everything and nothing at the same time," Ethan said, looking at me with a love so pure it took my breath away. "You and Sophie showed me what it truly means to live, to love, and to be a family. I don't want to spend another day as just your boyfriend. I want to be your husband. I want to be Sophie's father. Will you marry me?"

Sophie giggled, reaching out to touch the sparkling diamond ring in the box. "Dada!" she chirped.

May you like

It was the first time she had ever called him that.

Tears flowed fresh down my face as I nodded, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes! Yes, a million times yes, Ethan!"
