Chapter 6 - Trust and Shadows

As spring melted the Indianapolis snow into vibrant green lawns, my life settled into a beautiful, harmonious rhythm.
Sophie was thriving. She was sitting up on her own, her cheeks chubby and pink, her laughter filling my new, spacious apartment in a safe, quiet neighborhood. Maya had come back into my life, crying tears of joy and relief when she learned what had happened, and she happily took on the role of Sophie’s doting aunt.
But the biggest change was Ethan.
What had started as a professional rescue had blossomed into a deep, passionate romance. Ethan was no longer just the powerful CEO; he was the man who came over on Sunday afternoons in old jeans to help me assemble baby furniture, the man who let Sophie pull his hair and drool on his expensive shirts without a single complaint.
Yet, as we grew closer, I noticed a lingering shadow in Ethan's eyes.
One evening, after we had put Sophie to sleep, we were sitting on the balcony of my apartment, watching the city lights. Ethan was unusually quiet, his eyes fixed on the horizon.
"Ethan?" I asked, putting a hand on his arm. "Where did you go just now?"
He let out a long sigh, turning his hand to interlock his fingers with mine. "My father called today. He heard about Marcus's firing, and he heard about... us."
My heart tightened. "What did he say?"
"He thinks I’m making a mistake," Ethan said bluntly, though his grip on my hand tightened as if he were afraid I would pull away. "He thinks associating with... someone from a different social circle, especially with a child from a former employee, is a PR nightmare. He wants me to distance myself from you. He threatened to use his influence on the board to challenge my position as CEO."
A cold dread washed over me. I knew how much Cole Industries meant to Ethan. He had poured his entire life, his sweat, and his soul into building it.
"Ethan... if I'm putting your life’s work at risk—"
"Don't," Ethan interrupted, turning to face me fully. His eyes were fierce, burning with absolute certainty. "Don't you dare think that way, Clara. My father spent his whole life sacrificing people for profit. He died lonely, surrounded by money and nothing else. I am not going to repeat his mistakes. You and Sophie are the best things that have ever happened to me. I would walk away from Cole Industries tomorrow if it meant keeping you."

The sincerity in his voice brought tears to my eyes. I leaned in, pressing my lips to his, pouring all my gratitude, my love, and my devotion into the kiss. He pulled me close, holding me as if I were the only anchor in a storm.
We knew a battle was coming with the board, but for the first time in my life, I wasn't afraid. We were a team, and we were going to fight for our future together.
