Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Family Archives

Tomaso was dragged into the grand foyer ten minutes later, his face bruised on the left cheek where Marco’s enforcers had introduced him to reality in the estate’s security wing. He stumbled over the Persian rug, falling to his knees before Dante’s boots.

“Boss—Boss Caruso, I swear I didn't know—” Tomaso blurted out, trembling violently.

“Shut your mouth,” Dante said quietly. He remained standing beside the mantelpiece, looking down at his aunt with eyes devoid of any human emotion.

Aunt Gabriella had composed herself, setting her teacup down on a mahogany side table with a steady, calculated click. She lifted her chin, adopting the haughty dignity of the matriarch she believed herself to be.

“Is this how you treat your elders now, Dante? Dragging a faithful family guard into the parlor over the hysterical ravings of some broke little nobody you picked off the street?” Gabriella sneered, her eyes darting toward the front door where I still sat inside the armored car, watching the scene unfold through the glass.

“She is carrying my child, Gabriella,” Dante said, the words falling like lead weights.

For a fraction of a second, genuine shock flickered across Gabriella’s powdered face. She recovered quickly, pressing a hand to her chest. “An illegitimate claim! A gold-digger looking to bleed the syndicate dry now that her divorce settlement has run its course. You were a fool to let her back into your orbit.”

Dante walked over to the mahogany desk, picking up the red leather file Marco had brought earlier. He tossed it onto the glass coffee table directly in front of her.

“Look at the transfer logs, Aunt. Page twelve. The signature authorization code.”

Gabriella glanced down at the open file. Her eyes lingered on the encrypted string of numbers and letters—a private cryptographic key known only to the senior directors of the Caruso family trust.

“Signatures can be forged,” she said stiffly.

“Not with a quantum-encrypted biometric ledger,” Adrian Romano stepped forward, holding a tablet displaying real-time financial tracking. “The funds routed from Sophia’s settlement account didn't just land in a shell corporation. They landed in an account tied directly to your private Swiss holdings, Aunt Gabriella. Furthermore, Tomaso’s phone records show thirty-two encrypted communications between his burner device and your private residence over the past four months.”

Tomaso whimpered, pressing his forehead against the rug. “She told me to do it, Boss! She said if the divorce settlement went through normally, a portion of the family assets would be legally tied up in community property laws! She said Madame Gabriella wanted absolute control over the family trust, and an independent wife with legal rights to your estate was a security threat!”

Gabriella slowly turned her head to look at Tomaso, her eyes flashing with pure venom. “You pathetic fool,” she hissed.

“Why?” Dante asked, his voice cracking slightly with a pain that cut deeper than anger. He leaned down, placing his hands on the arms of her chair, bringing his face inches from hers. “After everything I gave you. After I honored my father’s dying wish to keep you safe and respected in this house… why would you try to starve my wife? Why try to kill my child?”

Gabriella stared back into his eyes, refusing to flinch, though her breathing grew shallow.

“Because you are weak, Dante,” she whispered fiercely. “You let sentimentality cloud your judgment. You married a common girl with no bloodline, no loyalty to the syndicate, and no understanding of our power. If you have an heir with a nobody, the bloodline is diluted. The council loses its grip. I was protecting the family empire from your sentimental blindness.”

“You weren't protecting the empire,” Dante said, straightening up and buttoning his suit jacket. “You were preserving your own control over the treasury.”

He turned to Marco. “Empty her accounts. Freeze every asset she holds under the Caruso name. Strip her of her security detail, her staff, and her title within the estate.”

“Dante! You cannot do this!” Gabriella shrieked, rising from her chair with sudden, frantic energy. “I raised you! I am blood!”

May you like

“Blood is why you are not lying in a shallow grave in the Pine Barrens right now,” Dante replied coldly. “Pack a single bag. By noon, you will be on a private flight to our estate in Sicily. You will remain under house arrest for the rest of your natural life, with no access to communication, money, or the outside world.”

As two enforcers stepped forward to take her arms, Gabriella looked past Dante toward the front doors, locking eyes with me through the tinted glass. Her expression twisted into a mask of pure hatred before she was dragged screaming out of the parlor.
