Chapter 10 - A Legacy of Peace

Ten years later.

The sprawling lawns of the Caruso estate were alive with the sound of laughter, music, and children running through the manicured rose gardens.

It was a warm Saturday afternoon in June, playing host to the annual summer gala of the Caruso Foundation—an event that brought together community leaders, philanthropists, hospital directors, and regional business associates from across the tri-state area.

I stood on the stone terrace overlooking the grand lawn, wearing a flowing summer sundress of pale lavender silk, watching a energetic ten-year-old boy with dark curls and fierce, intelligent eyes kick a soccer ball across the grass with Marco cheering him on from the sidelines.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and a chin rested comfortably on my shoulder.

“You’ve been standing here daydreaming for ten minutes,” Dante murmured, his voice rich and deep, still carrying that familiar cedar and tobacco scent that had comforted me on the darkest night of my life.

I leaned back against his chest, smiling as I covered his hands with mine. The platinum band with its rare pink diamonds sparkled brightly in the afternoon sun alongside my wedding band.

“I’m not daydreaming,” I replied softly. “I’m just remembering.”

Dante turned me gently in his arms, looking down into my eyes with the same unwavering devotion that had brought him to my hospital bedside ten years ago.

“Do you ever regret it?” he asked quietly, brushing a strand of hair from my cheek. “The world I brought you into? The danger, the shadows, the name?”

I shook my head, smiling as I reached up to touch the faint scar near his jawline from an old conflict long since resolved.

“You promised to protect us, Dante,” I whispered. “And you built an empire out of the ashes just to keep us safe. I don't see shadows anymore. I only see home.”

Across the lawn, young Lorenzo yelled out, waving excitedly toward us as he scored a goal past Marco. Dante raised a hand in acknowledgment, smiling proudly before looking back down at me.

The sun set slowly over the Hudson River, casting a golden, everlasting glow across the estate, sealing a past of pain into a future of absolute peace.
