Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the House

The living room grew deathly quiet, save for Valeria’s ragged, tearful breathing. The illusion of their untouchable superiority had completely disintegrated. Stripped of their stolen funds, their legal defenses, and each other’s loyalty, they stood exposed for what they truly were: desperate opportunists who had underestimated the quiet strength of a woman they thought they could easily manipulate.
Agent Garza pulled out a pair of metallic handcuffs, resting them casually on his palm.
"Mr. Robles, Ms. Santacruz," Agent Garza said evenly. "You have two choices. You can either accompany us downtown right now for formal interrogation, where these charges will be logged into the public record, or you can cooperate fully with the prosecutor’s office by signing an immediate confession and restitution agreement, returning every single peso within forty-eight hours in exchange for a recommended probation period instead of immediate incarceration."
Mauricio burst into hysterical tears, dropping heavily onto his knees right there on the living room rug.
"I'll sign it! I'll sign anything!" Mauricio sobbed, burying his face in his hands. "Mom, please... don't let them take me to jail. I'm your son. Please..."
Valeria stood frozen, staring down at her husband with absolute contempt. She realized then that her glamorous lifestyle was gone forever. Without Mauricio’s blind obedience and my financial backing, her social circle of superficial friends would drop her in a heartbeat.
"You're pathetic," Valeria whispered bitterly to Mauricio. "Both of you are pathetic."
She looked at me, her eyes burning with hatred, but beneath that hatred was pure, unadulterated defeat.
"Fine," Valeria spat out, her voice trembling with malice. "We'll sign your stupid papers. We'll leave your miserable house. But don't ever expect to see your son again. You've destroyed our family."
"No, Valeria," I said, stepping forward so she had to look me directly in the eye. "You and Mauricio destroyed this family the moment you decided that my life, my hard work, and my home were disposable commodities for your comfort. You are not victims. You are criminals caught in the act."
Mateo handed over the restitution agreements. With trembling, humiliated hands, both Mauricio and Valeria signed away their claims, their deceit, and their presence from my home.

Within two hours, their packed suitcases and plastic bins were piled high on the public sidewalk outside. A cheap taxi cab sat idling at the curb. As Valeria shoved her remaining belongings into the trunk without looking back, Mauricio lingered by the door, casting one last, pathetic look of a little boy seeking approval.
I closed the front door, threw the heavy deadbolt, and listened to the satisfying, secure click of the lock sliding firmly into place.
