Chapter 4 - Uncovering the Deepest Betrayal

Valeria let out a shrill laugh, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.

"Change the locks? Are you out of your absolute mind?" She looked at Mauricio, who was still staring at the tablet screen like a ghost. "Mauricio, tell your mother how the real world works. This house isn't just hers. Your name is on the property too, right? Tell her!"

Mauricio didn't answer. He couldn't. He knew the truth, even if he had lied to his wife to inflate his own importance.

"My name is not on the deed, Valeria," Mauricio muttered, his voice barely audible.

Valeria froze. Her eyes darted back and forth between us. "What do you mean, it’s not on the deed? You told me you co-owned this property! You said we would inherit it completely within a year!"

"He lied to you to impress you," I said, stepping forward. "Just like he lied to me about looking for a job when he was actually gambling online. Just like he lied when he promised to respect the roof over his head. Julián and I drafted the deeds twenty years ago. This house belongs to me, and to me alone."

Panic finally replaced arrogance on Valeria’s face. She realized that without the house, and without my bank accounts to prop up their lavish lifestyle of rented luxury items and high-end cafes, they were completely exposed. Their entire house of cards was built on my pension and my savings.

"This is illegal!" Valeria shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at me. "You can't just throw us out! We have rights as tenants!"

"You aren't tenants. You're guests who overstayed their welcome, and more importantly, criminals who committed financial fraud," I replied, tapping the tablet screen. "Unauthorized access to a senior citizen's bank account, forgery of digital signatures, and theft of retirement funds. Do you know what the police in Querétaro do with cases like this, Mauricio? Or should we call Officer Morales from the precinct down the street and ask him?"

Mauricio dropped into a chair, burying his face in his hands. The reality of prison time—or at the very least, a public scandal that would ruin whatever professional reputation he had left—finally hit him.

"Mom, please," Mauricio begged, his voice cracking with genuine tears now. "Don't call the police. Don't do that. We'll pay it back. I swear we'll get jobs, we'll cut expenses..."

"You have twenty-four hours," I said, my voice unyielding. "You will return every single peso you stole from my account into this digital wallet by tomorrow morning. And by tomorrow night, every single box of your clothes, your creams, and your fake luxury items will be out of my house."

Valeria opened her mouth to argue, to scream, to threaten lawsuits, but she looked at my face and stopped. There was no warmth left in my eyes for them. The mother who had coddled and forgiven them for years was dead. In her place stood a woman fighting for her survival.

As they stormed out of the kitchen to begin packing in a frenzy of slammed doors and furious whispers, I sat back down. But my investigation wasn't over. While looking through the bank history, I had noticed an odd recurring transfer—a monthly payment of ten thousand pesos going to an unknown entity named Inmobiliaria El Sol.

Curious, I opened my laptop and searched for the company name, digging deeper into records that Mauricio thought were securely hidden.

What I found made my blood run cold. It wasn't just my savings they were stealing. They had already put my house up as collateral for a private loan.
