Chapter 6 - The Confession and the Turning Point

The sharp, heavy knocks on the front door reverberated through the hallway like thunder. Valeria froze, her phone trembling in her hand, while Mauricio backed away toward the corner of the guest room as if he could melt right through the drywall.

"Open it," I told them, my voice cutting through the tense silence like glass.

I turned around, unlocked the guest room door, and walked steadily down the hall to the living room. When I pulled the heavy wooden door open, Mateo Silva stood on the porch, flanked by two men in civilian suits holding official briefcases, their identification badges clipped neatly to their breast pockets.

"Elena," Mateo said, stepping inside and giving my shoulder a reassuring squeeze. His eyes were sharp, scanning the quiet living room before fixing on Mauricio and Valeria, who had just shuffled out of the hallway, looking smaller and paler than ever.

"Mateo. Thank you for coming so quickly," I said, gesturing for them to enter.

The two state investigators—Agent Garza and Agent Ramos—did not waste any time. They stepped past us, flashed their credentials, and pulled out official tablets and printed documentation.

"Mauricio Robles?" Agent Garza asked, his voice cold and formal.

My son swallowed hard, his voice barely a squeak. "Y-yes?"

"And Valeria Santacruz?" Agent Ramos turned his piercing gaze toward my daughter-in-law.

Valeria tried to summon a fraction of her usual haughtiness, lifting her chin, though her lower lip was visibly shaking. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private family matter! We are leaving right now, you have no right to—"

"Ma'am, you are currently implicated in a federal investigation regarding digital identity theft, fraudulent mortgage acquisition under false pretenses, and systemic financial extortion of a senior citizen," Agent Garza interrupted smoothly, pulling out a detailed financial flowchart. "We have traced the digital IP addresses used to authorize the transfer of funds from Mrs. Elena Robles’s account directly to a shell corporation registered under your maiden name, Ms. Santacruz."

Valeria’s knees buckled slightly, and she had to grab onto the back of the living room sofa to keep from falling. All the expensive makeup in the world couldn't hide the absolute terror spreading across her face.

"It was a misunderstanding!" Valeria shrieked, her voice cracking. "It was just a temporary loan! We were going to pay it back! Ask him—Mauricio said his mother agreed verbally!"

Mauricio looked at his wife in sheer disbelief, his own cowardice overriding any loyalty he had left for her. "I never said that! You were the one who pushed for the loan! You said my mother's house was sitting empty and we deserved a head start in life!"

"You lying coward!" Valeria lunged toward him, her fingernails clawing at the air, but Agent Ramos stepped smoothly between them, blocking her path with professional precision.

"Keep your distance, please," Agent Ramos warned calmly. "Any further outbursts will result in immediate physical detention and transport to the central precinct."

Mateo walked over to me, handing me a clean, crisp document to review. "Elenita, the digital signatures have already been flagged and frozen by the cybercrimes unit. The fraudulent mortgage contract is legally void because the biometric verification was bypassed without your consent. The bank has already initiated a freeze on the transferred funds."

I looked down at the paper, feeling a profound weight lift off my chest. The nightmare was ending. The trap they had set for me had snapped shut on them instead.
