Chapter 9 - Peace at Last

That evening, after the guests had gone and the center was quiet, Lily and I sat together on the front porch of our home. The autumn air was crisp, carrying the earthy scent of falling leaves and woodsmoke from neighboring chimneys.
Lily rested her head gently against my shoulder, wrapped in a cozy knit blanket.
“Mom?” she murmured softly.
“Yes, my love?”
“Grandpa Walter would be happy, wouldn't he?”
I kissed the top of her head, wrapping my arms tighter around her.
“He would be more than happy, sweetheart,” I whispered, looking up at the twinkling stars breaking through the twilight sky. “He would be so proud of us. Of everything we’ve overcome.”

We sat together in comfortable silence, listening to the gentle rustle of the wind through the oak trees. The nightmares of the past—the betrayal, the cruelty, the fraudulent recordings—felt distant now, washed away by the tide of truth and justice.
We had lost a lot, but in losing the toxic anchors of our old lives, we had found our true strength. We were safe, we were loved, and our future was entirely our own.
