Chapter 6 - The Reckoning at the Estate

Two weeks later, the Hamilton County Courthouse was a circus of media flashbulbs and legal reporters. The state prosecutor had formally filed criminal charges against Douglas and Patricia Foster: forgery, wire fraud, uttering a false instrument, and financial elder abuse.

Because of the overwhelming forensic evidence provided by Arthur Pendelton and Grandpa Walter’s hidden flash drive, the judge denied bail, citing the high risk of flight.

I stood on the courthouse steps, holding Lily’s hand. Microphones were thrust into our faces from every angle, reporters shouting questions over one another.

“Ms. Alden! Is it true your own parents fabricated the will?” “Ms. Alden, how does it feel to take over the multi-million-dollar empire your father tried to steal?”

I raised my free hand, signaling for silence. The press corps quieted down, lenses zooming in.

“My father and mother chose greed and cruelty over family,” I said into the wall of microphones, my voice steady and clear. “They tried to silence a dying man, and they tried to break a little girl who sees the world with more clarity and honesty than they could ever comprehend. Today, justice has been served for my grandfather. Tomorrow, we rebuild our lives. Alden Medical Supply will remain a beacon of integrity, exactly as my grandfather intended.”

As we walked down the steps toward our waiting car, I looked down at Lily. She was wearing her favorite blue cardigan, her noise-canceling headphones resting comfortably around her neck. She looked up at me with a serene, bright smile.

“Mommy, can we get ice cream now?” she asked.

I laughed, a sound of pure, unadulterated freedom I hadn't felt in years. “Vanilla with rainbow sprinkles, sweetheart. As much as you want.”
