Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Cards

My father tried to salvage his dignity, but it was like trying to scoop water with a sieve. Within forty-eight hours of the board meeting, the corporate security team escorted my parents off the premises of Alden Medical Supply. Their office keys were confiscated, their corporate credit cards were frozen, and their personal assets were slapped with a federal injunction pending the full criminal investigation into document forgery and elder abuse.

Mom called my phone twenty times that evening. I didn't answer a single call. Finally, she sent a text message that read: How could you do this to your own flesh and blood? We gave you life! We gave you a home!

My reply was short and final: You gave me conditional love and tried to institutionalize my child. Enjoy the consequences.

Sitting in the grand, wood-paneled corner office that had belonged to my grandfather for over forty years, I felt a profound sense of peace. The desk was heavy mahogany, smelling faintly of leather polish and old paper. On the corner sat a framed photograph of Grandpa Walter holding me when I was a toddler, his eyes crinkling with absolute adoration.

There was a soft knock at the door, and Mr. Harrison poked his head in.

“Got a minute, boss?” he asked with a warm grin.

I smiled, gesturing to the leather armchair opposite my desk. “Always, Arthur. Please, come in.”

He walked in, carrying a thick binder labeled Q3 Financial Projections. He laid it on the desk before sitting down. “The board held an informal vote this morning, Eleanor. You’ve been unanimously confirmed as the Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson of the Board of Alden Medical Supply. The paperwork is already filed with the state.”

“Thank you, Arthur,” I said, feeling the immense weight of the responsibility settle onto my shoulders. “I won't let you down. And more importantly, I won't let Grandpa down.”

“I know you won't,” Arthur said, his expression turning thoughtful. “Speaking of your grandfather... he left something else in his private home safe. Something personal. He told me before he passed that if things ever went sideways, I should give it directly to you.”

He reached into his breast pocket and placed a small, vintage brass key and a handwritten envelope on my desk. The envelope bore my name in Grandpa’s familiar, elegant cursive: For My Ellie.

My throat tightened. I picked up the envelope, carefully sliding my finger under the flap. Inside was a single sheet of heavy parchment paper and a small, older-generation USB flash drive.

I unfolded the letter and began to read silently:

My dearest Ellie, If you are reading this, it means Douglas and Patricia have shown their true colors, and the wolves have finally come for the fold. I knew what they were planning, my sweet girl. I watched them isolate me, watched them scheme behind closed doors. But they underestimated my mind, and they severely underestimated your strength. On the flash drive attached to this letter, you will find years of financial records, correspondence, and bank transfers detailing how Douglas has been slowly embezzling from the company’s philanthropic foundation to fund his private real estate investments. Take back what belongs to our family, Ellie. Protect little Lily with everything you have. She is a brilliant light in a dark world, no matter what the fools around her say. Love always, Grandpa Walter.

A tear slipped down my cheek, landing softly on the paper. I looked up at Arthur, who was watching me with gentle empathy.

“Do you know what’s on this drive?” I asked.

“Only that your grandfather spent his last healthy months working with forensic accountants to secure ironclad proof of your father’s financial corruption,” Arthur replied quietly. “Douglas didn't just forge a will; he signed his own prison sentence years ago.”
