Chapter 8 - Dawn Over the Harbor

At 6:30 AM, the first pale streaks of amber light broke through the heavy gray clouds over the harbor, painting the rain-washed city in shades of gold and slate.
We drove back toward the waterfront in an unmarked federal vehicle, Vance riding shotgun while I sat in the back with Sofia, who had finally begun to stir. Her dark lashes fluttered against her cheeks, and she gave a soft, sleepy yawn, stretching her arms out as if she were waking up in her own bed on a lazy Sunday morning.
"Daddy?" she mumbled, rubbing her eyes with the back of her small hand. "Where... where are we?"
I pulled her close, kissing the top of her head as my eyes filled with tears of pure relief. "We're going home, sweetheart. Just home."
"Was I having a bad dream?" she asked, looking around the unfamiliar interior of the car before her eyes locked onto mine with startling clarity. "I remember... I remember Uncle Dante's office. I saw the papers. I wanted to show you because you looked so sad when you talked to him."
"You did the right thing, Sofia," I whispered, holding her tighter. "You saved us both. You never have to be afraid of him again."
When we pulled up to our estate on the cliffs overlooking the bay, the morning air was crisp and clean, washed entirely free of the grime and shadows of the past night. The iron gates swung open smoothly, no longer guarded by Dante's private enforcers, but by standard federal protection detail agents who nodded respectfully as our car passed through.
Ruby rode with us all the way to the front steps, her old blue sedan trailing behind our vehicle. She stepped out into the crisp morning air, stretching her arms toward the vast, open horizon where the container ships sat silently at anchor under the rising sun.

"Not a bad view for a first day on the job," Ruby murmured, walking up the stone steps beside us.
"It's only the beginning," I said, unlocking the heavy oak front door and stepping inside a house that finally felt like a true home.
