Chapter 7 - The Downfall of the House of Moretti

By 4:00 AM, the federal safehouse looked like a command center during wartime. Telephones rang in staccato bursts, secure printers hummed continuously, and agents in tactical gear moved with brisk, silent efficiency through the hallways.

Special Agent Vance stood by the whiteboard, staring at the rapidly expanding web of arrests scrolling across his laptop screen.

"We hit the main warehouse off Pier 4 twenty minutes ago," Vance said, not looking up as he tapped a key. "Dante didn't even try to run. When our tactical unit breached his office, he was sitting at his desk pouring himself a glass of scotch like he was expecting us. Not a single shot fired. He just handed over his remaining cufflinks and asked if his lawyer could meet him at holding cell block B."

I sat in a metal chair beside the sofa where Sofia was still sleeping peacefully, her hand curled into a loose fist. Ruby was sitting across from us, sipping a cup of black coffee provided by one of the federal agents, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and exhaustion.

"And the shipping manifests?" I asked quietly.

"100% verified," Vance said, turning the laptop screen toward me so I could see the cascading financial trails routed through three different shell corporations in the Cayman Islands. "Every asset Dante controls is currently being frozen by a federal judge. His accounts, his properties, his silent partnerships in the city council. The Moretti syndicate as you knew it is effectively dismantled before sunrise."

A profound, heavy weight lifted from my chest—a weight I hadn't realized I’d been carrying for a decade. The illusion of family unity, bought with silence and compromised morals, was finally shattered. What remained in its place was clean, sharp, and honest.

"What happens to us now, Mr. Moretti?" Ruby asked softly, breaking the silence of the room. "The diner... well, the front window is smashed, and I'm pretty sure the health inspector isn't going to love the smell of tear gas in the storage hall."

I looked over at her, realizing just how much I owed this young woman. If she hadn't picked up that phone after midnight, if she hadn't risked her own safety to check the restroom, my daughter would have been another statistic buried under an engineered accident.

"You don't ever have to flip another egg at midnight, Ruby," I said, smiling warmly. "Starting tomorrow, you have a permanent position as head of logistics coordination for Moretti Legitimate Shipping. Clean books, normal hours, and a salary that actually reflects your courage."

Ruby’s jaw dropped. She stared at me, blinking rapidly. "Are... are you serious? I don't even have a college degree in business!"

May you like

"You have better than a degree," Vance chimed in with a rare grin. "You have survival instincts and a backbone of steel. Take the job, kid."

Ruby let out a breathless, disbelieving laugh, burying her face in her hands for a second before looking up, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "Deal."
