Chapter 1 - The Hum of the Neon and the Shadow of the Crest

After midnight, a waitress whispered through my daughter's phone, 'Sofia is breathing.' My brother said, 'Stay quiet, or she stays locked inside that diner.' Then the waitress found an ambulance cancellation form claiming Sofia was a false alarm. His face went pale above the sleeve with one cufflink missing.

The diner had been closed for nearly an hour, but the neon still hummed over the rain-streaked windows. I was in the last booth with my brother Dante, pretending we were only talking about old family business. My daughter Sofia was supposed to be asleep upstairs in the office, curled under a blanket with her tablet and the stuffed bear she refused to outgrow.

Then her phone rang from a number I did not know.

I answered because fathers answer.

A young woman whispered, "Mr. Moretti, please do not hang up. My name is Ruby. I work the late shift here."

I stood so fast the coffee cup jumped in its saucer.

"Where is Sofia?"

Ruby was breathing like she had been running. "In the restroom by the storage hall. She is unconscious, but she is breathing. I found her behind the locked door."

My brother put one hand flat on the table.

"Enzo," he said softly, "stay quiet, or she stays locked inside that diner."

That was the moment the booth stopped feeling like furniture.

It felt like a trap.

Ruby kept whispering. She said Sofia had been clutching something in her fist when she found her. Not a toy. Not her phone. A torn silver cufflink with the Moretti crest pressed into the face.

Dante's cufflinks were silver.

Dante's cufflinks carried our crest.

I looked at his sleeves. One gleamed under the booth light. The other was bare.

He noticed me noticing.

For one second, the man who used to lift my daughter onto his shoulders looked like a stranger wearing my brother's face.

Ruby said someone had already called off the ambulance. She found the printed cancellation form by the diner phone, still warm from the little machine behind the counter. The form said Sofia Moretti was a false alarm. It said the child was awake and safe. It used a private code that only three people in my life knew.

Me.

My brother.

And the daughter lying on the restroom floor.

Outside, fists started hammering on the front glass.

Ruby sucked in a breath. "Do not send your men. They are already here."

Dante smiled with only half his mouth. "You always were dramatic."

I did not answer him.

I watched his missing cufflink, his dry hands, the sweat gathering at his hairline.

Ruby's whisper dropped even lower. "There is one more thing. Sofia woke for a second before she passed out again. She said one name."

May you like

The front door shook in its frame.

Ruby said, "She said Dante."
