Chapter 8 - The Final Reckoning

One year after the trial, I received a letter from the Ohio State Penitentiary.

Caleb Ross had requested a meeting through his secondary appellate lawyer, claiming he had hidden assets—money he had stolen from previous victims—that he wanted to return to Lily as restitution before he was transferred to a maximum-security facility in Colorado.

I showed the letter to Detective Miller over a phone call.

"Don't go, Elena," Sarah advised strongly. "He's trying to get inside your head one last time. Narcissists like him can't stand losing control."

"I know," I said softly, looking out the window at Lily, who was sitting on the lawn, laughing as Barnaby chased a gentle ocean breeze. "I'm not going for his money. I'm going so he knows he failed."

Two days later, I sat behind a thick glass partition in the prison visiting room.

Caleb was brought in, wearing heavy shackles around his ankles and wrists. He looked gaunt, his former charismatic charm completely stripped away by the harsh realities of prison life.

He picked up the phone receiver, and I did the same.

"You came," he said, a faint, bitter smile touching his lips. "I knew you couldn't resist."

"I came to tell you something, Caleb," I said, my tone entirely devoid of anger or fear.

"Did you come for the money?" he sneered. "There's nearly three hundred thousand dollars in an account in Zurich. I can give you the code, Elena. You just have to tell me how Lily is doing. Does she still wake up screaming? Does she still look for me under her bed?"

I looked at him with profound pity.

"She doesn't think about you at all," I said clearly. "She laughs every day. She swims in the ocean. She has forgotten your voice, your face, and your name. You didn't break her. You only showed us how resilient she truly is."

Caleb's eyes flashed with fury, his fingers tightening around the plastic receiver. "You're lying!"

"I don't need your money," I continued calmly. "We built a life without a single piece of you in it. You are going to spend the rest of your life in a small concrete box, forgotten by the world, while Lily grows up happy, safe, and loved."

I set the phone receiver back on its hook, stood up, and walked out of the room without looking back. Behind me, I could hear him banging his fists against the glass, shouting into the empty air, completely powerless.
