Chapter 5 - Echoes of the Hunt

Determined not to let Caleb walk free on a legal technicality, I spent the following weeks working alongside Detective Miller. I couldn't just sit in my quiet house—a house that felt contaminated by Caleb’s presence—and wait for a corrupt justice system to fail my daughter again.
While Lily stayed at my sister’s heavily guarded home in suburban Michigan, I began digging through the belongings Caleb had left behind in our home office.
The police had already cleared the room, taking his laptop and visible files. But I knew Caleb was a man of meticulous paranoia. There had to be something else.
I spent hours kneeling on the floor of his study, tapping on the wooden baseboards, checking behind paintings, and inspecting the floorboards under his massive oak desk. Late on a Tuesday night, I noticed a slight imbalance in the bottom drawer of the built-in bookshelf.
Using a butter knife, I pried open a false bottom.
Inside lay a small, black leather-bound notebook and a dark blue USB drive.
My hands trembled as I plugged the USB drive into my laptop. The drive was password-protected, but the leather notebook gave me the key. Pages upon pages were filled with dates, names, bank account numbers, and detailed medical observations written in neat, precise cursive.
It wasn't just Clara’s son, Toby, and my daughter, Lily.
There were three other families listed.
10/12/2014 – Seattle. Mark, age 4. Symptoms successfully induced. 05/18/2016 – Austin. Sophia, age 6. Terminated early due to maternal interference. 11/04/2019 – Columbus. Toby, age 6. Final phase completed.
Caleb was a serial predator. He sought out single mothers or women with young children, married them under false identities, insured the children, and systematically harmed them to collect life insurance payouts while tormenting the mothers to the point of breakdown.
And then I saw the section labeled Julian Vance.
In 2018, Julian Vance had been involved in an illegal offshore gambling ring and had laundered money using his deceased nephew’s trust fund—a fund set up by Clara. Caleb had discovered it and used it to force Julian to cover up Toby’s cause of death six years ago. Julian was an accomplice to his own nephew's murder.

"I found it," I gasped aloud, tears of rage and relief spilling down my cheeks. "I found everything."
I immediately dialed Detective Miller. "Sarah, get a judge on the phone. I have his master ledger."
