Chapter 6 - The Hidden Legacy
The discovery of the master ledger changed the entire trajectory of the trial. The USB drive contained encrypted video files that Caleb had secretly recorded inside our house, including footage of him preparing the allergen doses in the kitchen while I was away.
The prosecution reconvened the trial in a packed courtroom.
When Rachel Cole presented the newly discovered evidence, Julian Vance’s face turned deathly pale. He glanced back at Caleb, whose calm demeanor finally cracked. Caleb's eyes widened in genuine panic as the prosecution played a video clip in court: Caleb standing over Lily's crib months prior, holding a syringe, whispering chilling words about control.
"Your Honor," Rachel Cole announced, her voice ringing with authority. "In light of this unprecedented evidence, the state moves to expand the charges against Caleb Ross to include multiple counts of attempted murder, serial child abuse, and the murder of Toby Vance in 2019. We also request the immediate arrest of defense attorney Julian Vance for extortion, money laundering, and obstruction of justice."
The judge slammed his gavel down. "Motion granted. Bail is revoked. Officers, take Mr. Vance into custody."
Pandemonium broke out in the courtroom. Julian Vance didn't even put up a fight; he slumped into his chair, weeping silently as handcuffs were clanked around his wrists.
Caleb, realizing his entire world was crumbling, suddenly lunged forward toward the prosecutor’s table. "You think you won, Elena?!" he roared, his face contorted in pure malice. "She's damaged! I broke her! She will never look at you without remembering what I did!"
Two security guards slammed him onto the defense table, forcing his arms behind his back and hauling him out of the courtroom.
I stood there, holding my head high, looking him dead in the eye as he was dragged away. "She is stronger than you will ever be," I said, my voice steady and firm.

The trial ended swiftly after that. Caleb Ross was sentenced to three consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. Julian Vance was convicted of felony obstruction and financial fraud, receiving a twenty-year sentence.
The legal battle was won, but the real battle—the battle to heal my child's broken spirit—was just beginning.
