Chapter 9 - The Siege of Harlow Towers

Harlow Towers rose thirty stories above the city center, a monument to corporate greed and corruption. Tonight, the glass monolith was surrounded by a perimeter of private security forces armed with military-grade weapons.

But they weren't prepared for the wrath of the Hale organization.

Maddox’s convoy rammed through the reinforced security gates of the subterranean parking garage. The explosion of glass and steel echoed through the financial district like thunder.

Maddox stepped out of the lead vehicle, carrying a heavy tactical rifle, but beneath his bulletproof vest, his medical kit remained pressed against his ribs. He was a creature of two worlds tonight—the destroyer of evil and the guardian of life.

"Take the lower levels!" Maddox shouted over the roar of gunfire to his men. "Marcus, with me to the penthouse. We cut off the head of the snake."

They fought their way floor by floor, a grueling, exhausting ascent through corporate corridors turned into a battlefield. By the time Maddox kicked open the double doors of Calvin Roark’s top-floor penthouse, his suit was torn, his brow bleeding from a grazing bullet wound.

Inside, the room was luxurious, walled with floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the storm-tossed city. Calvin Roark stood near his desk, a glass of scotch in his hand, looking entirely unbothered. Beside him stood Don Altieri, his face pale as he realized his gamble had failed.

"Maddox," Roark said, taking a sip of his drink. "You’re too late. The trucks have already left the lower bays. Within an hour, my new compound will be distributed across every sector of this city. You’ve lost."

"No, Roark," Maddox said, stepping forward, his rifle pointed directly at the older man’s chest. "Your trucks didn't make it past the block. My men intercepted them at the gate. The chemicals are being secured by federal hazardous material teams as we speak—teams that Detective Carver called in twenty minutes ago using Marco’s decryption keys."

Roark’s face drained of color. The glass of scotch slipped from his fingers, shattering on the marble floor.

Altieri panicked, pulling a hidden pistol from his waistband and pointing it at Maddox. "You arrogant piece of trash—"

Bang.

A single shot rang out, but it didn't come from Maddox. Marcus had fired from the doorway, striking Altieri squarely in the chest. The old Don stumbled backward, crashing through the glass railing and plunging into the dark abyss below.

Roark dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he realized his empire had collapsed in a single night.

Maddox walked over to him, looking down at the man who had ordered Marco Reyes murdered and Elena beaten. He raised his weapon, the temptation to pull the trigger screaming through his veins. One pull, and the man who caused so much misery would be gone forever.

But then, Maddox remembered the soft touch of Elena’s hand on his chest. He remembered Nora’s purple octopus drawing. He remembered the promise he had made to be a man who builds a life, not just a man who takes it.

Maddox slowly lowered the rifle.

"Death is too easy for you, Roark," Maddox said softly. "You’re going to spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary, watching everything you built turn to ash. Carver is downstairs with the warrants. Enjoy the dark."
