Chapter 5 - Whispers in the White Collar

By Wednesday, the city felt like a pressure cooker waiting to explode. Maddox had convened a meeting of the five major underworld families at a neutral location—an underground vault beneath an old bank in the financial district.

The room was cold, filled with smoke and the heavy presence of dangerous men. At the head of the table sat Don Altieri, an old-timer with silver hair and a ruthless reputation.

"You brought us here because of a waitress and a dead logistics clerk, Hale?" Altieri sneered, flicking ash from his cigar. "Roark’s operation makes us all money. If he wants to flood the streets with a new compound, that’s his business. Why should we care if a few junkies drop dead?"

Maddox sat perfectly still at the opposite end of the table. He didn't lean back. He didn't show anger. He simply tapped his fingers against the polished wood.

"Because it’s not just junkies, Altieri," Maddox said, his voice cutting through the smoke like a razor. "The compound Roark is bringing in is highly unstable. It’s airborne in its pure form. If there’s an accident at the docks, the entire southern harbor will be a dead zone within three hours. Your businesses, your families, your luxury high-rises—all of it will be in the contamination radius. Roark isn't playing the game anymore. He’s suicidal with greed."

The other Dons shifted uncomfortably, exchanging glances. Maddox threw Marco’s encrypted flash drive onto the center of the table.

"On that drive is the proof. Roark has already bought out the federal judges who oversee our assets. If he goes down, he’s taking the entire city infrastructure with him to save his own skin. He’s already made a deal with the feds to turn state’s evidence on all of us the moment his shipment clears."

Altieri’s eyes narrowed. "And how do we know you aren't just trying to seize his territory for yourself?"

Maddox stood up, buttoning his black suit jacket. "Because I don't want his territory. I want his head. If you stay out of my way, I will clean this city up. If you side with him, I will treat you like the cancer you are. And as a former medical man, I can tell you—malignancies are always excised without mercy."

The room went dead silent. No one moved. No one spoke. Maddox turned and walked out, Marcus falling into step behind him.

As they reached the elevator, Marcus checked his phone. "Maddox, we have a problem. Detective Carver just showed up at the safehouse. He bypassed our external sensors. He says he needs to speak with Elena immediately."

Maddox’s blood turned to ice. "Carver? He’s supposed to be on the honest side of the ledger."

"He was," Marcus said grimly. "But Roark plays dirty. We need to get back."
