Chapter 4 - The Surgeon's Scalpel

The safehouse was a heavily fortified estate on the outskirts of the city, hidden behind towering stone walls and surrounded by ancient oak trees. Maddox had brought Elena and Nora there straight from the city.

Elena was pacing the floor of the expansive library when the heavy oak doors opened. When she saw Nora in Maddox’s arms, unharmed and asleep from the long drive, she let out a broken sob and rushed forward.

Maddox transferred the sleeping child to her arms with an aching tenderness. "She’s safe, Elena. They tried to take her from the school. It was Roark’s top enforcer, Vance. He won't be troubled by anyone again."

Elena shuddered, kissing Nora’s forehead before carrying her to a nearby velvet sofa, tucking a wool blanket around her. She turned back to Maddox, her eyes fierce. "Did you find the box?"

Maddox walked over to a massive mahogany desk. From his jacket pocket, he pulled out a small, dented metal lockbox. He placed it on the desk, took the brass key from his pocket, and inserted it into the lock. It turned with a heavy, metallic click.

Inside lay a single high-encryption flash drive and a stack of handwritten notebook pages.

Maddox picked up the flash drive, but his eyes drifted to the notebook pages. The handwriting was frantic, hurried—the final thoughts of a man who knew his time was running out. Maddox began to read the pages silently, his jaw tightening until the muscles leaped beneath his skin.

"What is it?" Elena asked, walking over to stand beside him. The scent of her—something soft and clean like lavender—cut through the heavy, masculine scent of the leather and wood library.

"It’s not just a financial ledger," Maddox said, his voice dropping an octave. "Marco discovered that Roark is importing a massive shipment of a deadly, unregulated chemical compound through the shipping yards this Friday. They’re going to use it to cut local narcotics, increasing their potency tenfold. It will kill thousands of kids in this city within a week. And the operation is being protected by Chief of Police Vance’s superiors and a federal judge."

Elena stared at the papers. "My husband died trying to stop a massacre."

"Yes," Maddox said. He looked down at his own hands, opening and closing his long fingers. "And the only way to stop it now is to surgically dismantle Roark’s entire infrastructure from the inside out."

"You talk like a doctor," Elena whispered, her eyes tracking the elegant movement of his hands.

Maddox let out a low, bitter laugh. "I was a chief surgical resident, Elena. I spent my youth learning exactly where to cut to relieve pressure, how to stop a bleed, how to preserve life. My father always told me that a surgeon and a Don aren't that different. Both have to cut away the rot to save the body. I hated him for it. But today... today he might have been right."

Elena stepped closer, close enough that she could see the faint scar running along his jawline. She reached out, her hand hesitant, before she placed her palm against his chest, right over his steady, beating heart.

"You are not your father, Maddox," she said softly. "A bad man wouldn't have run into that alley for a terrified little girl. A bad man wouldn't look at my daughter the way you do. You're going to stop them, aren't you?"

May you like

Maddox looked down at her hand on his chest. He felt an ache there—a warmth he had spent nine years denying himself. He placed his large hand over hers, pressing it tighter against his heart.

"I’m going to end them, Elena," he promised. "For Marco. For you. For Nora."
