Chapter 6 - Counter-Intelligence

At Claire’s office, the digital monitors erupted with activity. Claire’s automated wiretapping scripts had picked up an encrypted communication originating from Councilman Vance’s penthouse, routed through a secure municipal police frequency.

“Dominic, they’re moving,” Claire said, her fingers flying across her keyboard. “Vance just bypassed the standard chain of command. He called Police Commissioner Higgins directly. They’re organizing a high-profile tactical raid on the Harrison Street brownstone for 4:00 PM today. The official narrative is that you’ve kidnapped Lucy Bennett.”

Dominic stood behind her, his expression as unreadable as granite. “He’s desperate. He thinks he can use the law to do Victor's dirty work.”

“What’s the plan?” Anthony asked, entering the room with a tactical map of the brownstone neighborhood. “We can’t engage the police, Dominic. If my men exchange fire with tactical units, everything we’ve built to legitimize our organization goes up in flames. Vance wins automatically.”

“We won’t engage them,” Dominic said smoothly. “We’re going to give them exactly what they want—and nothing of what they need. Claire, how much time do we have until the press conference Vance scheduled for noon?”

“Exactly forty-five minutes,” Claire said.

“Good. Antony, evacuate Grace and Lucy from the brownstone immediately. Move them to the secure apartment overlooking the river—the one Elena uses for her private counseling sessions. It’s entirely off the grid. Nobody knows about it except the three of us.”

“Consider it done,” Anthony said, already on his phone.

“And what about Elena?” Claire asked, looking at Dominic with deep concern.

“Elena stays with me,” Dominic said. “We are going to meet Councilman Vance at his own game. Claire, I need you to broadcast a live digital feed to every major news outlet in the city, timed precisely to the moment Vance steps up to his microphone at noon. You’re going to leak the financial records connecting his trust fund to the Cyprus bank account.”

Claire smiled, a brilliant, dangerous spark in her eyes. “I’ve been waiting twenty years to dismantle a network like this, Dominic. It will be my absolute pleasure.”

Dominic turned back to the window. The trap was set. Vance thought he was leading a crusade, but he was actually walking straight into a digital execution. Yet, Dominic knew that the political side was only half the battle. The true threat was still Victor Halden, a man who didn't care about press conferences or polling numbers. Victor wanted blood, and he would use the chaos of the police raid to find it.

Dominic pulled his phone from his jacket and dialed a number he hadn't called in years. It belonged to an old friend from his early days—a man named Marcus, who now ran the dockworkers' union down at the shipyards.

“Marcus,” Dominic said when the line connected. “I need a favor. I need the shipyards cleared of all civilian personnel by three o’clock. And I need you to leave the gates to the old Aquatic Transit facility wide open.”

“Anything for you, Dominic,” Marcus replied without hesitation. “What’s coming?”

“An old debt,” Dominic said. “It’s time to pay it in full.”
