Chapter 5 - The Politician's Gambit

The next morning, the sun broke through the gray clouds, casting a sharp, unforgiving light over the city. In the penthouse suite of the Grand Plaza Hotel, Councilman Thomas Vance sat at his mahogany desk, reviewing his latest polling numbers. He was a sharp-featured man of fifty, with perfectly coiffed gray hair and an expensive tailored suit that screamed ambition.

His door opened without a knock. Victor Halden stepped inside.

Vance frowned, gesturing quickly to his assistant to leave the room and lock the door behind her. “What are you doing here, Victor? We agreed you would never come to my campaign headquarters. If anyone sees you—”

“Relax, Tommy,” Victor said, his voice a raspy, dry whisper that sounded like dead leaves scraping across concrete. He sat down in a leather armchair, completely unbothered by the luxurious surroundings. “Your security is a joke. And your polling numbers won't matter if we don't fix the mess from last night.”

Vance’s expression hardened. “What mess? You told me the Bennett girl would be secured by midnight. Her mother is an ER nurse—she has no influence, no connections. It was supposed to be a simple disappearance to kickstart my campaign’s focus on neighborhood insecurity.”

“The girl broke through the window and ran straight to Dominic Moretti’s restaurant,” Victor said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. “She’s with him now. He’s locked her away.”

Vance stood up, his face reddening with anger. “Moretti? You told me Moretti wouldn't suspect a thing! If he connects this to me—”

“He won’t connect it to you unless he gets his hands on me,” Victor interrupted smoothly. “And that isn’t going to happen. Moretti has become soft. He plays the businessman now. He spends his money on youth centers and legal defense funds. He’s forgotten how to bleed.”

“You don’t understand the depth of his network, Victor,” Vance said, pacing behind his desk. “He owns half the city's infrastructure. His security teams are better trained than the local police department. If he finds out about the Cyprus accounts—”

“He won't,” Victor said, leaning forward. “Because we’re going to turn the tables. You’re going to call a press conference this afternoon. You’re going to announce that you have credible information that Dominic Moretti is harboring an abducted child at one of his illegal safehouses. You bring the police, you bring the cameras, and you raid his property. You ruin him publicly, and in the confusion, my men will take the girl and his sister. Two birds. One stone.”

Vance hesitated, his political instincts screaming at him that this was an immense risk. But he was already too deep in the mire. If he backed out now, Victor would expose the financial transactions that funded his entire political rise.

“Which property?” Vance asked, his voice shaking slightly.

Victor smiled, a grotesque display of yellowed teeth. “I’ve spent the last twelve hours tracking his security movements. I know exactly where he keeps his sister. The brownstone on Harrison Street. Call your commissioner. Tell him to get the tactical units ready. We strike at four o’clock.”
