Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Claire Lawson’s office was located on the top floor of a converted industrial warehouse in the arts district. It looked less like a private detective’s agency and more like a high-tech command center. Server racks hummed quietly in the corner, and three massive, high-definition monitors dominated the main wall, casting a cool blue glow across the sleek, minimalist furniture.

When Dominic and Anthony arrived, Claire didn't waste time with pleasantries. She met Dominic’s gaze, her dark eyes reflecting both concern and a sharp, analytical focus.

“I tracked the van,” Claire said, tapping a key on her console. One of the monitors zoomed in on a satellite map of an abandoned industrial park near the shipyards, three miles south of the restaurant. “It entered this sector at 11:42 PM. It didn’t come out. There’s an old maritime repair facility here—abandoned since the late nineties. It’s owned by a shell corporation called 'Aquatic Transit Holdings.' Guess who originally set up that shell in 1999?”

“Victor Halden,” Dominic said, his fists clenching at his sides.

“Exactly,” Claire said, pulling up another set of data. “But it gets more complicated. I ran the financial trail from Cyprus. The money didn’t come from an old criminal associate. It originated from a trust fund controlled by Thomas Vance.”

Anthony let out a sharp breath. “Vance? The city councilman running for mayor?”

“The very same,” Claire nodded. “Vance’s campaign platform is entirely built on clearing out the 'old criminal elements' of the city—specifically targeting your legitimate construction contracts and real estate holdings, Dominic. If Vance can orchestrate a massive uptick in child disappearances or high-profile crimes tied to areas you protect, it ruins your public reputation, destroys your community base, and gives him the leverage he needs to seize your assets under municipal emergency acts.”

The pieces of the puzzle clicked into place with terrifying precision. Victor Halden hadn't returned to the city by accident. He had been hired as a weapon by a corrupt politician who wanted to dismantle everything Dominic had built over the last twenty years. Victor got his revenge and his old trafficking routes back; Vance got the mayor’s seat and absolute control over the city’s redevelopment funds.

“He’s using Victor to clear the board,” Dominic murmured, his voice deadly quiet. “And Lucy Bennett was supposed to be the first piece to drop. A nurse’s child, taken from a neighborhood under my protection. It would show the city that Moretti’s promises of safety are worthless.”

“What’s the move, Boss?” Anthony asked, his hand resting instinctively near his holster. “We take ten men, hit the shipyard facility, and end this tonight.”

“No,” Dominic said, his mind racing through the tactical implications. “Victor is a rat, but he’s a smart rat. If he sees a tactical force approaching, he’ll vanish into the river, or worse, he’ll accelerate his timeline and target someone else. We need to cut off his funding and his political protection first. Claire, can you link Vance directly to the Cyprus account with hard evidence?”

“I can get the digital signatures,” Claire said, leaning forward. “But to make it legally binding—to ruin Vance completely so he can’t use his police connections to bail Victor out—I need the physical ledger or the encrypted drive that Victor keeps on his person. You know how he operates, Dominic. He never trusts digital networks entirely. He always keeps a physical copy of his blackmail material.”

“Then we get that drive,” Dominic said. “Anthony, increase the guard around my sister’s safehouse. Double it. If Victor realizes he missed Lucy, he might try to go after someone he knows will break me.”

“I’ll personally handle the safehouse perimeter,” Anthony said. “Nobody gets within two blocks.”

Dominic stepped closer to Claire, looking down at the monitor showing the abandoned shipyard. “I spent twenty years thinking this man was a ghost, Claire. Now he’s a man with an address. I’m going to end this, but I need to do it in a way that protects this city, my family, and the future we built.”

Claire reached out, her hand gently covering his. “Be careful, Dominic. Victor knows you’re the one who tore his world apart twenty years ago. He’s been waiting for this match just as long as you have.”
