Chapter 8 - A New Dawn
Two weeks later, Nathaniel Brooks was officially discharged from Saint Augustine Medical Center.
The send-off was unlike anything the hospital had ever seen. Nurses, doctors, administrative staff, and cleaning crews lined the ground-floor lobby, applauding as Nathaniel walked out under his own power, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, looking healthier and more vibrant than he had in years.
He didn't take the private limousine waiting outside immediately. Instead, he stopped right in front of the main reception desk, where a small girl in a brand-new green dress and a very sparkly pair of pink sneakers was waiting with her mother.
Nathaniel knelt down so he was eye-level with Lily.
"Well, Captain," Nathaniel said with a gentle grin. "My corporate lawyers tell me I'm back in charge. The bad guys are gone, the company is secure, and I have a very busy schedule starting tomorrow."
Lily tilted her head. "Are you going to go back to making computers?"
"I am," Nathaniel nodded. "But I'm going to add a new rule to every office building we own."
"What rule?" Lily asked.
"Always leave the door open for someone who needs a song."
Lily beamed, reaching into her orange glittery backpack and pulling out a small, slightly crumpled piece of paper covered in bright yellow and purple crayon strokes. She handed it to him. "For your office. So you don't get lost in the dark again."
Nathaniel took the drawing with both hands, treating it with the same reverence he would have given a billion-dollar contract. He folded it carefully and placed it in the inside pocket of his jacket, right over his heart.
"Thank you, Lily," he whispered. "I'll keep it safe."

As Nathaniel stood up and offered his hand to Maria—who was now dressed in her Sunday best, still looking slightly dazed by the miraculous turn their lives had taken—he smiled toward the bright autumn sunlight streaming through the glass doors.
The dark days of Room 417 were behind him. But the melody that had pulled him through them would stay with him for the rest of his life.
