Chapter 7 - The Ripple Effect

By evening, the hospital corridors were buzzing with a different kind of energy. The murmurs of despair that had haunted the ICU for three months were replaced by shock, disbelief, and a quiet sense of awe.
News outlets had already caught wind of the miraculous awakening of tech billionaire Nathaniel Brooks, though none of them yet knew the true catalyst behind it. Rumors of a "medical anomaly" and a "spontaneous neurological reset" flooded local news channels.
Inside Room 417, the atmosphere was warm and peaceful.
The medical monitors had been disconnected, save for a routine post-recovery check, and the room was filled with the soft rustle of wrapping paper. Nathaniel had insisted on turning the hospital suite into a makeshift celebration room, ordering gourmet catering from the finest restaurant in the city for the nursing staff.
Maria Carter stood nervously near the door, clutching her hands together in front of her blue uniform.
"Mr. Brooks, I... I am so, so sorry," Maria stammered for the fifth time, her eyes wide with a mixture of awe and terror. "I had no idea Lily wandered into your room. If I had known she was bothering you while you were sick—"
"Bothering me?" Nathaniel interrupted, gently setting down his glass of water and looking at Maria with a depth of sincerity that instantly silenced her. "Maria, for ninety days, I was trapped in a pitch-black room inside my own head. No light. No sound. No way out. Every single person who walked into this room talked about me as if I were already a ghost."
He looked over at Lily, who was currently sitting cross-legged on the hospital bed, carefully applying glitter stickers to a fresh piece of paper.
"Your daughter walked in without an invitation, sat down in a cold plastic chair, and treated me like a human being," Nathaniel continued, his voice thick with emotion. "She told me about her cat. She told me about her school. And she sang me back to life."
Maria swallowed hard, tears welling up in her tired eyes as she pulled Lily close against her hip. "She... she always has a big heart. Sometimes too big for her own good."
"Her heart is exactly the right size," Nathaniel said firmly. He reached into the pocket of his wool coat, pulled out a heavy, embossed leather folder, and placed it gently on the bedside table. "I spoke with my legal team and the hospital board of directors about an hour ago. Effective immediately, Saint Augustine Medical Center is receiving a twenty-million-dollar endowment for pediatric care and employee family support."
Maria’s jaw dropped. "Tw-Twenty million...?"

"And as for you, Maria," Nathaniel added with a warm, genuine smile, "I've established a full-ride educational trust fund for Lily, guaranteed through any university degree she chooses to pursue. Furthermore, my corporate foundation is launching a nationwide initiative for working parents in the service sector—starting with full housing grants and medical coverage for every hospital support staff member in this state."
Maria burst into tears, covering her mouth with her hands as she pulled Lily into a fierce, suffocating hug. Lily patted her mother’s back, totally unbothered by the grand gesture, and went back to her stickers.
