Chapter 9 - Echoes in the Alley

Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the ballroom had grown quiet, Dario and Anna walked out onto the private outdoor terrace. The October air was crisp and biting, carrying the familiar scent of the lake and the distant hum of city traffic.

Anna pulled her light wool wrap tighter around her shoulders, leaning against the glass railing. Dario stepped up beside her, wrapping his warm overcoat around her shoulders as well, pulling her close against the cold wind.

"Are you thinking about what happened last year?" Anna asked quietly, her breath forming small clouds in the frosty air.

"Sometimes," Dario admitted, looking out toward the dark silhouette of City Grace Hospital in the distance. The lights of its executive wing twinkled harmlessly against the night sky. "I think about how close I came to taking those pills. I think about how easy it would have been for my father's story—and mine—to end in a quiet hospital room, erased by men who thought they owned the world."

Anna turned her head, resting her cheek against his shoulder. "We don't live in the past anymore, Dario. We built something real out of the ashes."

"We did," Dario agreed, kissing the top of her head. "Because Miri refused to look away. She remembered everything that mattered."

"She's a remarkable little girl," Anna said, a soft pride warming her voice. "She still keeps a small collection of smooth stones and colorful bottle caps in her room. She says you never know when something ordinary might turn out to be important."

Dario smiled in the darkness. "She's right. The most important things in life are usually the ones people step right over without looking."

From inside the penthouse, the faint sound of music drifted through the open double doors, mingled with the happy barking of the German shepherd and the sound of Miri practicing her violin—a little out of tune, but full of life, energy, and relentless joy.
