Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the White Coat

The early morning mist hung heavy over Lake Michigan, casting a spectral gray film across the glass of the penthouse. Dario Ferrante stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, a cup of black coffee cooling in his hand. He had not slept. The words of a seven-year-old girl echoed in his mind like dripping water in a cave: Please don't take your medicine today.

In the guest wing on the south side of the penthouse, Anna and Miri were still asleep, cocooned in sheets softer than anything they had ever touched. Downstairs, in the secure underground garage, Marco was already coordinating with a specialized extraction team. They needed to move quietly. City Grace Hospital was a fortress of medical bureaucracy, elite patronage, and deep-pocketed donors. Dr. Ferdinand Holt was not just a physician; he was a pillar of Chicago's medical establishment, a man who sat on hospital boards and dined with city councilmen.

By eight o’clock, Dario was seated at his mahogany desk. A secure laptop glowed in the dim light, displaying a detailed blueprint of City Grace Hospital, specifically the private executive wing on the fourth floor where Dr. Holt maintained his primary office.

Marco stepped into the study, his footsteps silent on the thick Persian rug. "Boss, Dr. Park finished analyzing the chemical breakdown of the pills from the safe. She confirmed your suspicion. It's a synthetic variant of digitoxin designed to mimic natural ischemic heart failure. Even if an autopsy had been ordered by a suspicious relative, standard hospital screenings would have missed the binding agents unless they specifically ran a mass spectrometry test for secondary plant alkaloids."

Dario didn't look up from the blueprint. His jaw was set in a hard, unyielding line. "My father trusted him. For thirty years, Holt was a fixture in our home. He watched me grow up. He held my mother's hand when she passed."

"Betrayal of that scale takes patience," Marco replied evenly. "Holt wasn't working alone. The pharmaceutical supply chain inside City Grace is tightly locked down. Only the chief of pharmacology and the senior attending physicians have access to the compounding lab after hours. Someone with real authority authorized those changes."

"Find out who," Dario ordered, his voice dropping an octave. "I want every financial record, every offshore transfer, and every visitor who entered Holt's private residence over the past six months. If he has a handler, I want their name before the sun sets."

"Already on it, boss. But what about the hospital visit? Holt is expecting you today at nine to review your quarterly labs. If you don't show up, he'll know something is wrong."

Dario stood up, adjusting his cuffs. A dark, dangerous calm settled over him. "That is why I am going to keep my appointment."

"Boss—"

"I am going to walk right through those front doors," Dario interrupted, his eyes cold as winter steel. "I am going to sit in his office, smile at him across his polished mahogany desk, and watch him try to figure out why the poison didn't work."
