Chapter 4 - The Secrets of the Harbor District

The penthouse library had been converted into a temporary war room. Maps of the Chicago harbor district, financial spreadsheets, and aerial photographs of municipal buildings were pinned across a large magnetic board.
Anna sat in an armchair by the fireplace, a cup of tea between her hands, watching quietly as Dario and Marco coordinated their next moves. Miri was curled up on the rug near the sofa, fast asleep with her head resting on the soft flank of the family's massive German shepherd, who guarded her like a fallen soldier.
"Alderman Thomas Vance," Marco said, tapping a red marker against a photograph of a silver-haired politician smiling beside the mayor. "He’s been quietly buying up commercial real estate along Calumet through shell corporations. For years, your father blocked every zoning change he tried to push through the city council. Emilio Ferrante owned the critical land parcels needed to expand the municipal shipping lanes. As long as your father was alive, Vance couldn't touch them."
"And when my father died," Dario said, staring at the board, "the estate went into probate under my control. I was young, distracted by restructuring our operations, and Vance thought he could wear me down over time. But when I refused to sell the port land last month, they decided it was time to repeat history."
"They used Holt because he had access to your medical file through the family trust," Marco added. "It was the perfect crime. No bullet wounds, no forced entry, no suspicious witnesses. Just an inherited heart condition catching up to another Ferrante."
Anna looked up from her tea, her voice trembling slightly. "How can men like that just... decide who lives and dies? It's terrifying."
Dario turned away from the board and looked at her. For the first time, the hard, impenetrable armor around his eyes softened. "They think money and power make them untouchable. They think the law is a tool they can bend to their will. But they forgot one thing."
"What's that?" Anna asked softly.
"They forgot that people at the bottom see everything," Dario said, glancing down at Miri sleeping peacefully on the floor. "The wealthy hide behind walls and locked doors, believing they are invisible. But the people who clean their offices, who sort their garbage, who walk the dark alleys at night—they see the truth. Nothing stays buried forever."
Marco's phone buzzed sharply on the desk. He picked it up, listened for a few seconds, and looked up at Dario with a sharp glint in his eye.
"We have movement," Marco said. "Holt cracked under pressure. He didn't want to take the fall alone. He just signed a full confession detailing Vance's involvement, complete with audio recordings of their meetings in private clubs downtown. Furthermore, Holt revealed that Vance is hosting a private gala tonight at the Chicago Yacht Club to celebrate the final approval of the harbor redevelopment project."

Dario straightened his jacket, his expression hardening into absolute resolve.
"Then we are going to crash the party."
