Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The presence of the child welfare investigator, a sharp-eyed woman named Agent Sarah Jenkins, instantly shifted the atmosphere in my grand foyer from stunned silence to bureaucratic urgency. Agent Jenkins stood by the doorway, her notebook already open, her pen poised above the paper like a judge's gavel.

"Mr. Carter, I understand the shock of this situation," Agent Jenkins said, her tone professional yet softened by the sight of the shivering child. "However, protocol dictates that an abandoned infant must be taken into state custody for immediate medical evaluation and temporary placement until legal paternity can be established. Furthermore, this minor"—she gestured toward Lily—"cannot remain here without a verifiable guardian or child services clearance."

Lily shrank back against Mrs. Harris's armchair, burying her face slightly against the edge of the blue blanket that still enveloped the baby. The newborn let out a soft, whimpering cry, as if sensing the danger of separation.

"She is not going anywhere," I stated, my voice carrying the firm, unyielding authority that had built my global logistics empire from the ground up. "Neither of them are leaving this house until I have answers. Mrs. Harris, please ensure Lily has a warm meal, dry clothes, and a safe room prepared. Agent Jenkins, you are welcome to stay, observe, and review the documentation we just uncovered, but let's make one thing clear: these children are under my roof, under my protection, and under my immediate personal responsibility."

Agent Jenkins blinked, clearly unaccustomed to billionaires pushing back against standard state protocols with such fierce possessiveness. She looked at the official envelope still clutched in my hand, then at the striking resemblance between my eyes and the infant's wide, blinking gaze.

"Mr. Carter, without a court order or immediate DNA verification, my hands are tied regarding the state's custody procedures," Agent Jenkins warned. "If that letter is legitimate, and you are indeed biologically linked to this child, we can fast-track emergency guardianship. But until then, I must legally log this incident."

"Log it however you see fit, Agent," I replied, turning toward my private study. "Call your superiors, bring a medical team here to conduct an on-site paternity swab, and do whatever paperwork is required. But this baby stays right here with me, and Lily stays right where she is safe."

As Mrs. Harris gently led Lily toward the warm kitchen, I walked into my study and locked the heavy mahogany door behind me. I laid the aged envelope on my glass desk. The paper was slightly yellowed at the edges, bearing a watermark from a high-end medical vault in Boston—the exact facility where I had stored my biological samples over a decade ago when facing a terrifying diagnosis of stage-three lymphoma.

I had beaten the cancer, but the treatments had left my personal life in ruins. My fiancée at the time, Victoria Vance, had vanished during my darkest months of chemotherapy, claiming she couldn't bear to watch me waste away. We hadn't spoken in twelve years. Yet here, in this letter, was handwriting that belonged to her.
