Chapter 2 - The Truth Exposed

The silence in the penthouse was suffocating, broken only by the hum of the nebulizer and Noah’s shallow, but steady, breathing. Adrian’s gaze shifted from his son’s peaceful face to the angry red mark on Maya’s cheek, and finally to Janet, whose face was rapidly losing color.

"Is this true, Janet?" Adrian’s voice was dangerously low, a stark contrast to the thunder rattling the panoramic windows.

"Mr. Cole, you can't possibly believe these vagrants!" Janet stammered, stepping backward. "I am a certified medical professional. This woman broke into your home. She’s a thief, a liar—"

"I asked you a question," Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping an octave. He walked over to the hallway security monitor and tapped the screen, pulling up the live playback from the living room camera.

The footage didn't lie. It showed Noah coughing violently, struggling to reach his medication while the monitor wailed. Janet was nowhere to be seen—later footage would show her fast asleep in the guest room with noise-canceling headphones on. The video then showed Maya, who had noticed the frantic beeping through the building's ventilation shaft from the lower lobby, rushing up the service stairs. She had found the penthouse door slightly ajar from a delivery earlier that day.

The camera captured the moment Maya rushed in, immediately clearing Noah’s airway and administering the nebulizer just as Janet finally woke up. Instead of helping, Janet had panicked, struck Maya across the face, and accused her of assault to cover her own negligence.

Adrian turned slowly, his eyes burning with a cold fury. "Get out."

"Mr. Cole—"

"If you are not out of this building in three minutes, I am calling the police, the nursing board, and every high-profile family in Chicago. You will never work in this country again," Adrian said, his voice trembling with restrained anger.

Janet grabbed her coat and bag, fleeing into the private elevator without another word.

Adrian exhaled a breath he felt like he’d been holding for months. He rushed to Noah’s side, kneeling on the plush rug. "Noah, buddy, are you okay?"

"I'm okay, Dad," Noah said, his voice weak but stable. He reached out and touched Maya’s hand. "She knew exactly what to do."

Adrian looked at Maya. The defensiveness in her eyes was melting away, replaced by pure exhaustion. "You're a nurse," Adrian realized aloud.

Maya offered a faint, sad smile, gently rubbing Sophie’s back. "I used to be. Before everything fell apart."
