Chapter 6 - Betrayal in the Dark

Sarah and Arthur bounded up the grand staircase, Arthur’s heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer. They burst into Finley’s room.

The bed was empty.

The covers were thrown back, and Finley’s favorite plush astronaut was lying forgotten on the floor. On the bedside table sat an open glass vial and an empty syringe—a mild sedative used for child transport.

"Finley!" Arthur screamed, running into the adjoining bathroom, then the closet. Empty.

Sarah ran to the window. Outside, down in the rear courtyard near the service entrance, a black SUV was idling. Brenda Thompson was fast-marching toward the vehicle, holding a blanket-wrapped bundle in her arms—Finley, unconscious and limp. Beside the SUV stood Dr. Evans, holding the rear door open.

"They have him!" Sarah shrieked, pointing out the window. "They’re taking him!"

Arthur didn't say a word. The refined billionaire disappeared, replaced by a father driven by pure, primal instinct. He sprinted down the hallway, down the back servant stairs, and burst through the heavy kitchen doors into the morning air just as the SUV’s engine roared to life.

"Evans! Stop!" Arthur roared, tearing across the cobblestone driveway.

Dr. Evans panicked, jumping into the passenger seat and shouting at Brenda, who was behind the wheel. "Drive! Get us out of here!"

Brenda slammed her foot on the gas. The heavy SUV accelerated forward, heading straight for the wrought-iron gates at the end of the driveway.

Sarah ran out behind Arthur, her heart in her throat. She knew they couldn't catch a car on foot. But the heavy electronic gates were closed, operating on a ten-second delay cycle that Brenda had triggered with her remote.

The SUV slammed into the moving iron gate before it could fully open, the crunch of metal tearing through the quiet morning. The vehicle stalled, smoke pouring from the crumpled hood.

Arthur reached the driver's side door in seconds. Fueled by adrenaline, he grabbed an iron lawn decoration from the border path and shattered the driver's window. He reached inside, unlocked the door, dragged Brenda out by her collar, and threw her onto the grass.

"Get away from my son!" Arthur bellowed.

Sarah sprinted up to the rear door, pulling it open. Finley was slumping in the back seat, stirring weakly, his eyes half-open from the sedative.

"Sarah..." he whimpered, his voice tiny and slurred. "I was sleeping..."

"I've got you, baby. I've got you," Sarah sobbed, pulling him out of the car and holding his small body tight against her chest. She backed away safely into the garden as sirens began to wail in the distance—Dr. Rostova had called the police the moment they discovered Finley missing.

Dr. Evans stumbled out of the passenger side, hands raised, his face pale and sweating. "Arthur, listen to me! It was Brenda! She forced me into this! The trust money—"

Arthur didn't listen. He stepped forward and landed a single, powerful right hook that dropped the doctor instantly to the gravel.

As the police cruisers pulled into the long driveway, light bars flashing red and blue against the weeping willows, Arthur turned back. He walked slowly over to Sarah and Finley, his hands shaking, tears cutting tracks through the dust on his face.

He sank to his knees in front of Sarah, putting his arms around both of them, pulling them both into an embrace that held all the grief of the past six years and all the hope of the future.
