Chapter 10 - The Best Surprise

Sarah stepped onto the small stage, the applause swelling around her. Finley immediately wrapped his arms around her waist, and she knelt down to hug him tightly, kissing his forehead.
"You did amazing, champ," she whispered.
"I have one more surprise," Finley whispered back with a mischievous wink.
Sarah stood up, looking confused.
Arthur stepped toward her, taking both of her hands in his. The crowd went silent, sensing the momentous shift in the room.
"Sarah," Arthur said, his voice steady, though his eyes burned with deep emotion. "A year ago, you walked into a house filled with darkness and grief. You defied doctors, you stood up to threats, and you saw a miracle where everyone else saw tragedy. You didn't just teach Finley how to walk. You taught me how to live again. You taught us how to be a family."
Arthur reached into his jacket pocket and brought out a small, black velvet box. The room gasped softly.
He dropped down to one knee in front of her. Finley stepped beside his father, beaming with absolute delight.
"Arthur..." Sarah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, tears overflowing her lashes.
"Sarah O'Connell," Arthur said, opening the box to reveal a stunning diamond ring that caught the ballroom lights. "You are the heart of this house. You are Finley's hero, and you are the love of my life. Will you marry me, and make this family whole forever?"
Sarah looked from Arthur’s earnest, loving face down to Finley, who was practically bouncing on his heels with anticipation.
"Say yes! Say yes!" Finley squeaked, unable to contain his excitement.
The entire ballroom burst into soft laughter.
Sarah sank to her knees, matching Arthur's height, threw her arms around his neck, and pulled him close.
"Yes," she sobbed happily against his neck. "Yes, of course! A thousand times yes!"
Arthur wrapped his arms around her, lifting her slightly as the room exploded into a standing ovation. Finley threw his arms around both of them, joining in the massive, joyful embrace.
Later that night, long after the guests had departed and the ballroom lights were dimmed, the three of them walked together out into the moonlit garden.
Finley ran ahead, chasing fireflies along the stone path—the very same stone path where, a year ago, he had lifted his trembling foot three centimeters off the ground in secret.
Arthur slipped his hand into Sarah's, pulling her close against his side as they watched their son run freely beneath the willow tree.

"He's fast," Arthur smiled softly, kissing the top of Sarah's head.
"He's unstoppable," Sarah corrected gently, leaning her head against his shoulder. "And he's home."
