Chapter 7 - Reconnecting

An hour later, the formal court proceedings were adjourned. Temporary protective custody was immediately transferred to Michael, pending standard administrative clearings, with Nathan named as co-guardian.
In the private family consultation room downstairs, the door opened slowly.
Eli stepped inside, holding his basketball under one arm. He looked between Nathan and the stranger standing beside him. The resemblance between all three was undeniable—the dark curls, the gray-green eyes, the small crescent mark above their brows.
Michael dropped to his knees, his hands trembling slightly as he looked at his son for the first time in six years.
"Eli," Michael whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I'm... I'm your dad."
Eli stood still, his small fingers tightening around the basketball. "My mom told me about you. She said you were far away, keeping the world safe so we could be together again someday."
"I was far away," Michael said, tears slipping down his face. "But I never stopped looking for my way back to you. Not for one single day."
Nathan stood near the window, watching the two of them. The heavy weight of guilt that had rested on his shoulders for nearly a decade—the belief that his harsh ultimatum eight years ago had pushed his brother into oblivion—began to dissipate like mist in the morning sun.
Michael stood up and turned to Nathan. The two brothers looked at each other, years of unspoken anger, regret, and sorrow hanging between them.
"Nathan," Michael said quietly. "I'm sorry I let you believe I was dead. I thought it was the only way to keep you out of Victor’s crosshairs."
"I'm sorry I didn't listen to you back then," Nathan replied, stepping forward. "I thought I was protecting you with strict rules, but I was just pushing you away."
Michael closed the distance and embraced his brother tightly. Nathan pulled him in, closing his eyes as the final remnants of their past rift melted away.

Eli walked up, tugging gently on Nathan’s coat. "Does this mean you're my uncle?"
Nathan knelt down beside the boy, smiling through his tears. "It sure does, Eli. And you're never going to have to worry about where you belong ever again."
