Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Shadows

The Baltimore County Courthouse was quiet on Thursday morning. The marble corridors echoed with the hushed whispers of lawyers and family members waiting for their cases to be called.

Nathan sat on a bench outside Courtroom 3B, his lawyer, Sarah Lin, sitting beside him. Across the hall sat Vanessa Reed, accompanied by a sharp-looking attorney in a dark suit.

"Nathan," Sarah said quietly, reviewing her tablet. "If we want to secure visitation or temporary custody of Eli, we have to prove two things: first, that you are biologically related to him via DNA; second, that granting you access serves the best interest of the child. Vanessa’s lawyer is going to argue that your presence puts Eli in emotional distress and potential danger."

"I don't care about the legal maneuvers, Sarah," Nathan whispered, staring at his hands. "I care about the truth. Someone tried to kill my brother eight years ago. Now suddenly a life insurance claim worth millions is activated right after Jenna dies? Someone is pulling the strings."

Before Sarah could reply, the court doors opened, and a man in a tailor-made grey suit walked out accompanied by two bodyguards. Nathan recognized him instantly.

It was Victor Vance—no relation to Marcus, but a high-ranking senior partner at Cole Logistics, Nathan’s own company, and a man who had been a trusted advisor to Nathan's father decades ago.

"Victor?" Nathan stood up, bewildered. "What are you doing here?"

Victor Vance paused, adjusting his gold silk tie. His expression was cool, professional, and entirely devoid of warmth.

"Hello, Nathan," Victor said smoothly. "I’m here representing the corporate board and the estate trust."

"What trust?" Nathan demanded, stepping forward. "What does Cole Logistics have to do with my brother's child?"

"Nine years ago, before Michael left the company, he signed a restructuring agreement," Victor explained calmly. "Under the terms of that agreement, a significant portion of shares was placed into a blind trust earmarked for his heirs. When Michael vanished, those shares remained frozen. But with Jenna’s death and the potential identification of a direct legal heir—Eli—the trust is unlocked. The controlling vote of Cole Logistics now hangs in the balance."

Nathan felt as if the air had been sucked from his lungs.

When Michael had left the family business, Nathan thought the split was purely emotional. He had no idea Michael had retained a key percentage of corporate voting shares inside a restricted trust. If Eli was declared Michael's legitimate heir, whoever became Eli's legal guardian would hold the ultimate deciding vote over the future of Nathan’s entire company.

"You knew," Nathan said, turning his head slowly toward Vanessa. "You knew about the shares."

Vanessa looked away, her eyes glistening with tears, but she didn't deny it.

"Nathan," Victor added softly, stepping closer. "Don't make this personal. The board wants stability. You've built a great company, but you don't control the majority without those trust shares. If the boy goes to a court-appointed guardian sympathetic to our investment group, we can finalize the merger with Apex Global."

The pieces of the puzzle began falling into place with alarming clarity.

Eight years ago, Nathan had fought against the merger with Apex Global, a corporate conglomerate known for stripping down companies for parts. Michael had opposed it too. But if Michael had died, his shares would have remained locked—preventing either side from making a move.

Now, with Jenna dead and Eli discovered, the race for control was back on.

"It was never about Michael's personal debts," Nathan whispered, staring at Victor. "The accident eight years ago... it was about the company."

Victor's face remained impassive, but his eyes narrowed slightly. "Be very careful what you accuse people of without evidence, Nathan. See you in court."
