Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

That evening, Nathan met Marcus Vance at a secure warehouse on the outskirts of the city. The rain had turned into a steady, freezing snow.

"You were right, Nathan," Marcus said, laying out fresh wiretap logs and public records on a folding table. "Victor Vance—no relation to me, thank God—has been in secret negotiations with Apex Global for over six months. They need those trust shares to force a buyout of Cole Logistics."

"Did Victor cut Michael's brake lines eight years ago?" Nathan asked, his voice low and dangerous.

"I can't prove it yet, but the timeline matches," Marcus said. "Eight years ago, Michael discovered someone inside Cole Logistics was skimming millions from the expansion funds. He threatened to go to the authorities. A week later, his car went over the cliff near the bay. But Michael was smart. He knew he was in danger. He jumped out of the car before it crashed, faked his death, and went into hiding."

"Where is he, Marcus?" Nathan begged, stepping closer. "Where is my brother?"

"He was in hiding with Jenna for the first two years," Marcus said. "Then, to keep Jenna and baby Eli completely safe, Michael cut all contact with them and fled the country. He knew that as long as he was anywhere near them, Victor’s hired people would keep hunting."

"Is he still alive?"

Marcus hesitated. He pulled a photograph from his pocket and laid it on the table.

It was a grainy surveillance photo taken six months ago at a harbor terminal in Lisbon, Portugal. A man in a dark coat stood near the docks, looking out at the sea. Though older, thinner, and bearing a long scar along his jawline, the resemblance was undeniable.

It was Michael.

Nathan stared at the photo, a wave of emotion crashing over him. Tears welled in his eyes. For eight long years, he had carried the crushing weight of guilt, believing his harsh words had driven his younger brother to his death.

"He's alive," Nathan whispered, touching the photo. "My brother is alive."

"Yes," Marcus said. "But Victor Vance is closing in. Victor found out about Eli six weeks ago when Jenna died in the hospital. Jenna knew she was sick, so she tried to contact Michael through an encrypted network. Victor intercepted the signal. That’s how he tracked down Harbor House."

"And Vanessa?" Nathan asked. "Why is she working against me?"

"Because Victor threatened her," Marcus revealed. "Victor told Vanessa that if she didn't help him gain legal guardianship of Eli—using Jenna's old paperwork—he would destroy Michael's location data and make sure Eli ended up in a permanent state facility where no one could reach him. Vanessa thought she was protecting the boy from both Victor and you."

Nathan slammed his fist on the table. "Enough. No more hiding, no more legal games. We are going to protect Eli, bring Michael home, and take Victor down."

"How do you want to play this?" Marcus asked, a grim smile touching his lips.

Nathan looked at the photograph of his brother, then thought of the little boy with the dark curls and gray-green eyes sitting alone in Harbor House.

"Tomorrow morning, we give the court the one thing Victor Vance never prepared for," Nathan said coldly. "The truth
