Part 8: The Russo Shield

Elena sank onto the wooden bench in the mudroom, burying her face in her hands. The armor of professional calm she had worn for eight weeks had completely shattered. For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the heavy patter of rain against the glass and her ragged, shallow breathing.

Dominic didn't crowd her. He stood tall beside the doorway, his broad frame blocking the view from the kitchen where the girls were still chattering over their crayons. He waited patiently, recognizing the posture of someone who had carried a crushing secret for far too long.

"My brother," Elena finally whispered, her voice cracking as she wiped a tear from her cheek. "His name is Leo. Or at least, it used to be before gambling debts and loan sharks completely hollowed him out."

Dominic crossed his arms over his chest, listening intently. "Go on."

"After my husband and daughter died... I had nothing left. I tried to help Leo. I covered his debts once, then twice, using what little insurance money I had left," Elena explained, her voice trembling with a mixture of grief and fury. "I thought paying them off would save him. But mob enforcers don't work like that. Once they smell blood, they keep coming back. Last year, they attached his debt to my name through forged co-signer documents. They've been hunting me down ever since, threatening me, demanding money I don't have."

She looked up at Dominic, her dark eyes filled with desperate fear. "When I applied for this job, I used a variation of my middle name just to hide from them long enough to breathe. I didn't know you were... I didn't know you were Dominic Russo. If I had known, I would never have stepped foot on this property. I didn't want to bring my nightmare into your home. I swear to God, I never wanted to put your daughters in danger."

Dominic stood in silence, processing every word. He looked at the woman standing before him—a woman who had spent her days healing his broken children while carrying a terrifying storm of her own, completely alone.

A slow, cold fury began to burn in Dominic’s chest, directed entirely at the cowards who had dared threaten someone under his roof. In his world, protection was absolute. If someone served in his house, if someone cared for his flesh and blood, they fell under the shadow of the Russo family shield. Anyone who threatened that safety had just signed their own death warrant.

Dominic reached down, taking Elena by the hand and pulling her gently to her feet. His grip was firm, grounding, and completely steady.

"Look at me, Elena," he said, his voice deep and resolute.

She looked up, startled by the intensity in his grey eyes.

"You are not alone anymore," Dominic said quietly. "You walked into this house and gave me back my daughters when the entire world failed. You brought music and laughter back into these walls. You think I am going to let some low-level street thugs touch a hair on your head?"

A fresh tear slipped down Elena's cheek, but this time, a small, disbelieving smile broke through her terror. "Mr. Russo... you don't understand. These men—they're connected to the syndicate out of Queens. They're dangerous."

Dominic let out a short, humorless chuckle. "Elena... I am the syndicate."

He pulled out his own encrypted satellite phone, dialing a direct extension with his thumb while maintaining direct eye contact with her.

"Viktor," Dominic spoke into the phone the instant the line connected.

"Boss? I thought we finished the dock review," Viktor’s voice came through.

"Cancel whatever you're doing," Dominic ordered, his voice dropping into the lethal register of a mafia boss issuing a final decree. "Pull two tactical units from the Manhattan detail immediately. I want every low-level enforcer and loan shark operating out of Queens under the banner of a scrub named Leo Vasquez tracked down, rounded up, and brought to the Elmhurst warehouse within the hour. And Viktor?"

"Yes, Dominic?"

"Make sure they understand that anyone who has ever made a phone call to Elena Vasquez will never make another phone call again in this lifetime."

"Consider it done, boss," Viktor replied without missing a beat.

Dominic clicked off the phone and slipped it back into his pocket. He turned back to Elena, whose eyes were wide with a mix of shock, awe, and profound relief.

"Go back to the kitchen, Elena," Dominic said softly, his hand resting reassuringly for a fraction of a second on her shoulder. "Finish coloring with Mia. Let me handle the monsters."
