Part 5: The Secret Fortress

By Saturday afternoon, the mist had cleared, leaving behind crisp autumn air and brilliant blue skies. Dominic had canceled all of his morning meetings—an unprecedented move for a man whose schedule was governed by multi-million-dollar syndicate logistics and international affairs. His caporegimes and lieutenants were likely tearing their hair out in Manhattan, but for the first time in fourteen months, Dominic didn't care.
He stood on the back patio overlooking the sprawling lawns, wearing a simple navy sweater instead of his usual three-piece suit. Through the large glass doors of the sunroom, he watched Elena and his daughters.
They were building a fort.
Not an expensive, store-bought playhouse, but a chaotic, glorious structure made of dining room chairs, heavy wool blankets, sofa cushions, and couch pillows. Mia was directing operations with wild hand gestures, while Lucia and Valentina hauled heavy pillows across the Persian rug.
Elena was on her hands and knees, holding up a heavy velvet drape to form the roof of the fortress, laughing as Valentina accidentally tripped over her own shoelaces and tumbled onto a pile of cushions.
Dominic slid the glass door open and stepped onto the sunroom floor.
The sound of his footsteps made them freeze. The laughter cut off instantly.
Dominic raised his hands slowly, palms open, in a universal gesture of peace. "I come in peace," he said, keeping his tone light. "I noticed an unauthorized construction project violating local residential zoning laws in my living room."
The girls looked at each other. Mia peered out from behind a stack of oversized cushions, her dark eyes wide. "It's... it's a secret base," she whispered.
"A secret base," Dominic repeated, walking slowly toward them, making sure not to tower over their space. He stopped a few feet away and looked down at the lopsided blanket roof. "Does this secret base require a security detail? Or perhaps an allied nation to form a treaty?"
Valeria tilted her head, her curls bouncing. "What kind of treaty?"
"A non-aggression pact," Dominic said, crouching down so he was at eye level with them for the first time in over a year. He felt a sharp ache in his knees, but he ignored it. "And maybe... an invitation to enter. If the architects permit it, of course."
Mia looked back at Elena, who was kneeling quietly near the back of the fort, watching the interaction with calm, steady eyes. Elena gave Mia a microscopic nod of encouragement.
Mia turned back to her father, chewing her lower lip. She reached out and grabbed the edge of his navy sweater, tugging him forward an inch. "You have to crawl," she said seriously. "Only guards who crawl are allowed inside."
Dominic felt a lump rise in his throat. He didn't care about his clothes, he didn't care about his dignity as a feared underworld boss. A man who had survived assassins and betrayal dropped unhesitatingly onto his hands and knees on the hardwood floor.
He crawled under the heavy velvet drape, ducking his head to enter the dim, cozy interior of the blanket fort. The space smelled of lavender laundry detergent, old books, and warm skin.
Lucia, Valentina, and Mia scrambled around him, suddenly filled with nervous, excited energy. Mia handed him a battered plastic crown from an old dress-up set. Without a second thought, Dominic placed the pink plastic crown atop his dark, neatly styled hair, where it sat ridiculously askew.

The three girls burst into genuine, uninhibited laughter—a sound like bells ringing in a quiet room.
Dominic looked across the small space. Elena was sitting just outside the opening, smiling softly as she watched them. Their eyes met through the gap in the blankets. In that silent exchange, there was no boss, no housekeeper, no suspicion—just two adults watching three little girls finally come back to life.
