Chapter 8 - Shadows Lifting

The sirens of local emergency services began to wail in the distance, but they belonged to a world Dario Cassano no longer needed to worry about. Within twenty minutes, the data center was completely secured by Cassano’s inner circle, leaving behind only the smoldering wreckage of an empire that had tried to build its future on the back of a frightened child.
In the back of a newly arrived black SUV, the heating was turned up high. Lucia was wrapped in a thick, cashmere wool blanket, holding a steaming cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows that Leo had managed to procure from an all-night diner three blocks away.
Dario sat beside her, watching her take small, hesitant sips. The harsh lines of his face seemed to have softened, the eternal vigilance of a mafia boss giving way to something much quieter, much older.
"Are we safe now?" Lucia asked, looking up from her cup with wide, curious eyes.
"We're safe," Dario answered, his voice steady and warm. "Nobody is ever going to hurt you again, Lucia. I give you my word."
"What about my mama?" she asked, a sudden shadow crossing her features. "She’ll be worried... she doesn't know where I am."
Dario smiled gently—a rare, genuine smile that reached his eyes for the first time in fifteen years. "Your mother is already waiting for us at our safehouse, Lucia. A team brought her there an hour ago. She’s safe, she’s warm, and she has a lot of new options waiting for her."
Lucia’s face lit up with a brilliant, unreserved smile that completely transformed her features, erasing every trace of the street-hardened survivor she had been forced to become. She set the cup down on the console and, to the absolute shock of Leo in the front seat, leaned over and wrapped her small arms tightly around Dario’s neck.
Dario froze for a fraction of a second, not entirely accustomed to uncalculated affection. Then, slowly, his large arms came around her, holding her securely against his chest.
Up front, Leo checked the rear-view mirror, a faint grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Where to, Boss? The main estate?"
May you like
Dario looked down at the little girl, who was already beginning to nod off against his shoulder, her breathing slow and peaceful.
"No, Leo," Dario said softly, his eyes gazing out the window at the morning sun finally breaking through the heavy grey clouds over the city. "Not the estate. Let's go home."
