Chapter 5 - The Real Trap is Revealed

Dario sprinted back toward the entrance of Warehouse B with a speed that defied his fifty-eight years, Leo and the guards close on his heels. The heavy metallic smell of gunsmoke hit them before they even cleared the doorway.

Outside, the parking bay was a scene of calculated chaos. The secondary guards left behind were pinned down behind a stack of concrete barriers, returning fire toward a pair of black armored vans that had blocked the exit. But worse than the gunfire was the sight of the silver sedan.

The rear door was wide open.

Dario felt his heart hammer against his ribs—a sensation he hadn't experienced in decades. "Lucia!"

He cleared the distance in seconds, throwing himself toward the open door of the vehicle. The interior was empty. The plush floor mats were scuffed with muddy bootprints, and the tablet he had left on the seat was dark, its screen shattered by a heavy impact.

Leo reached the car a second later, his weapon scanning the perimeter. "Boss! They took her. A tactical unit—professional grade. They didn't come to assassinate us; they came to snatch the girl!"

Dario gripped the edge of the car door so hard his knuckles turned white. His mind raced, connecting the terrifying dots. Lucia hadn't just happened to be in that underground garage by chance. She hadn't just stumbled upon Nico planting the transmitters.

She was the target all along.

"It was a setup," Dario realized, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. "They couldn't get near her because she was hiding within our territory, or because someone was protecting her. So they used Nico to bait us into the garage, knowing we’d find the transmitters and bring the child with us for protection."

Leo cursed fiercely, kicking the side of a concrete pillar. "And by bringing her into the convoy, we brought her right out into the open where they could ambush the transport!"

Dario turned back toward the warehouse entrance, where Nico Falco was being dragged out into the daylight by two of Cassano’s guards, struggling and laughing hysterically with blood dripping from his lip.

Dario walked up to Nico, grabbed him by the lapels of his jacket, and hoisted him off his feet with terrifying strength.

"Where is she?" Dario snarled, his face inches from Nico's. "Where did they take her?"

Nico wheezed, coughing up a drop of blood, but his eyes remained wild and manic. "You... you think you own this city, Dario? You think your name still protects you? The people who took her don't care about your mafia, your money, or your blood. They want the key."

"What key?" Dario demanded, shaking him like a ragdoll.

"The girl isn't a beggar, Dario," Nico gasped, a cruel grin spreading across his face. "She’s the granddaughter of Arthur Vance. The cyber-intelligence architect who wiped out half our offshore accounts before he disappeared five years ago. He locked the master encryption keys inside a neural bio-token—and the only living match... is her DNA."

Dario stared at him in stunned silence. Vance. The legendary rogue programmer whose encrypted digital vault held enough evidence to bring down half the intelligence agencies and syndicates on the continent. The man the Cassano family had hunted for a decade before he vanished off the grid.

And little Lucia wasn't just a random street child. She was Vance's legacy.

"If they get a full genetic extraction," Leo said, his voice dropping to a horrified whisper, "they can unlock the vault and control every black-market node, government backdoor, and financial network from here to Zurich."

Dario slowly lowered Nico back to the concrete, but his eyes never left the traitor's face. The cold, calculating master of the Cassano empire felt a rare, searing wave of protectiveness wash over him. That little girl had stood in front of an SUV to save his life, asking for nothing in return except safety.

"Leo," Dario said, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling finality. "Call the whole syndicate. Mobilize every man, every contact, every weapon we have."

"Where are we hitting them, Boss?" Leo asked, pulling out his encrypted satellite phone.

Dario looked out across the grey expanse of the harbor toward the old municipal data center towering against the horizon. "We aren't just hitting them, Leo. We're going to tear their entire network apart from the inside out."
