Chapter 7 - Breaking the Firewall

Across the room, Leo reached the secure medical lab behind the main platform, his tactical knife slicing through the heavy electronic seal of the reinforced glass door with a sharp screech of tearing rubber and sparks.
Inside the sterile chamber, the diagnostic screens were flashing a bright, pulsing green. Lucia was still strapped into the recliner, her eyes wide with fear as the neural sensors on her temples began to emit a high-pitched whine.
"Boss! We got her!" Leo shouted over the comm-link, holstering his weapon as he rushed to the side of the chair. "The bio-token sequence is finalizing! If we disconnect her improperly, it could trigger a neurological feedback loop!"
Dario shoved Thorne away, letting him collapse into a heap against the server racks, and sprinted into the lab. He dropped to his knees beside Lucia, ignoring the glowing terminal screens entirely.
"Lucia," Dario said softly, gently placing his large, warm hand over her cold, trembling fingers. "Look at me. Look right into my eyes."
The little girl turned her head, her lower lip trembling. "Are you going to leave me here?"
"Never," Dario promised, his voice carrying an absolute, unbreakable weight. "You saved my life, Lucia. Now it's my turn. But I need you to be brave for just one more minute. Can you do that for me?"
She nodded faintly.
"Good girl," Dario said. He looked up at the main server interface where the decryption progress bar sat at ninety-nine point nine percent. Time was measured in milliseconds. If that bar hit one hundred, Thorne's network would automatically transmit the master keys across the dark web, making Lucia a permanent target for every intelligence agency and syndicate on earth.
There was no time for software overrides. There was only one way to stop it.
Dario stood up, drew his custom revolver, and without a moment's hesitation, aimed the barrel directly at the primary mainframe liquid-cooling core behind the console.
"Boss—!" Leo yelled, shielding Lucia with his own body.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Three heavy-caliber rounds tore through the thick titanium casing of the cooling unit. Supercooled liquid nitrogen erupted in a blinding cloud of freezing white vapor, flooding the mainframe architecture. Sparks showered wildly as internal circuits shorted out in massive cascading failures. The hum of the servers died instantly, replaced by the dead, oppressive silence of absolute darkness.
On the desk, the glowing progress bar stuttered, flickered once, and then vanished completely as the screen went permanently black.
The vault was sealed. The keys were safe. The network was dead.
Thorne let out a horrified gasp from across the room, watching his life’s work evaporate into a cloud of harmless steam. "You... you destroyed millions of dollars in architecture... you destroyed everything..."
May you like
Dario didn't even look back at him. He unclipped the neural sensors from Lucia’s temples with gentle, practiced hands, then lifted the little girl up into his arms, resting her small head securely against his shoulder.
Lucia buried her face in the expensive fabric of his coat, finally letting out a long, exhausted sigh as the terror of the day melted away into deep, profound safety.
