Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the Ruins

With Arthur gone and the merger finalized, the Vance estate underwent a radical transformation. The old system of rigid domestic hierarchy was dismantled entirely.
I hired a boutique, highly transparent human resources firm that specialized in ethical estate management to handle the logistical aspects of the house, but the ultimate authority remained with the family and the staff themselves. We instituted monthly roundtable meetings in the main dining room—the very room where I used to host heads of state—where the housekeepers, chefs, gardeners, and security personnel sat together with me and my mother to discuss working conditions, equipment needs, and household budgets.
But the biggest change was reserved for Rosa and Camila.
True to my word, Rosa did not stay in the Elm Street apartment. Within thirty days of the confrontation, my mother approached Rosa with a proposal.
"The guest cottage on the north side of the estate has been empty for five years," my mother said during one of our afternoon teas in the sunroom, with Rosa sitting alongside us as a guest rather than a servant. "It has two bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a beautiful garden. We would like you and Camila to move in there. It will be your permanent residence, fully covered by the estate, independent of your salary."
Rosa’s eyes filled with tears. "Ma'am... I can't accept that. It’s too much."
"It isn't an act of charity, Rosa," I stepped in, handing her a new contract. "It’s an investment in the people who keep this family whole. You are our head of domestic operations now. You aren't just cleaning quarters; you are managing the staff logistics and ensuring the estate runs with the dignity it deserves. This cottage is part of your executive compensation."
Rosa looked at the contract, which included a salary that was triple what Arthur had allowed her to receive, full medical benefits, and a corporate college fund structure for Camila.
"I don't know what to say," Rosa whispered, her voice choking with emotion.
"Say yes, Mom!" Camila’s voice rang out from the doorway. She had just come home from her new school, her backpack hanging from both shoulders this time, her uniform neat and clean.
We all laughed, the sound warm and vibrant against the marble walls that had once felt so cold.

The transition happened over the weekend. The staff helped Rosa move her belongings into the beautiful, sunlit cottage on the north grounds. Camila finally had a bedroom with a large window that looked out over the rose gardens, and a desk where she could do her homework without the fear of the lights being turned off.
I watched her run through the gardens with the house dogs, her laughter echoing across the lawn. The estate didn't look like a corporate monument anymore. It looked like a living, breathing community.
