Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Estate Manager

Arthur took a seat, placing the leather folio precisely on the edge of my desk. He crossed his legs, completely at ease, a master of his domain. To the outside world, he was just an employee, but in the hierarchy of this mansion, his word was law.

"Before we open the books," I began, leaning back against my desk, "tell me about Rosa Martinez. How long has she worked for us?"

Arthur offered a dismissive wave of his hand. "Three years, perhaps four. A standard placement. Reliable enough until recently, but as you know, Julian, these people often bring their personal financial dramas into the workplace. I suspect she’s mismanaged her funds and is using this theatrical display with her child to extort a bonus or an advance from your generosity."

"These people," I repeated, the phrase tasting like ash in my mouth. "And what about the bank error she mentioned? The one she was told about every week?"

Arthur sighed, a well-rehearsed performance of administrative fatigue. "A minor glitch in the third-party payroll provider. I’ve been corresponding with their compliance officer. It’s a tedious process, but I assured her it would be resolved. It’s unfortunate she lacked the patience to wait for the proper channels to clear the issue."

"Is that why the routing number on her profile points to Apex Domestic Logistics?" I asked, dropping the question into the room like a heavy stone.

Arthur’s expression didn't change immediately. The smile remained fixed on his face for a fraction of a second too long before his eyes hardened. The relaxed posture stiffened.

"I'm not familiar with that specific technical terminology, Julian. The IT and payroll systems are handled by an outside vendor," he said, his voice losing a degree of its warmth.

"Don't lie to me, Arthur," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. I opened my laptop fully and spun it around so the screen faced him. The display showed the corporate registry of Apex Domestic Logistics, alongside the altered banking records of every staff member in the house. "You didn't just target Rosa. You targeted everyone. You’ve been skimming the entire domestic budget for ninety days. Where is the money?"

Arthur looked at the screen. The polite, deferential estate manager vanished. He didn't panic; he didn't beg. Instead, a cold, arrogant smirk crept onto his face. He leaned back in the chair and uncrossed his legs.

"You think you’ve uncovered a grand conspiracy, Julian?" Arthur said, his tone turning sharp and condescending. "You spend your life in glass towers signing pieces of paper for billions of dollars. You have no idea what it takes to run a place like this. You don't know the cost of your own lifestyle."

"I know the cost of a contract," I replied. "And I know the definition of grand larceny."

"Go ahead and call the police," Arthur said, gesturing toward the phone on my desk with supreme confidence. "See what happens when the financial records of Apex Domestic Logistics are made public. Do you know whose name is on the primary authorization mandate for that shell company? It’s not mine."

"It’s my mother’s," I said. "And we both know she has no idea what a shell company even is."

"A court of law won't care about her lack of financial literacy," Arthur sneered. "The signatures are valid. The digital keys used to authorize those transfers were issued from her private terminal in the west wing. If you drag me down, Julian, you drag Eleanor Vance right along with me. The scandal alone will destroy your Beverly Hills merger before the ink is dry on the contracts."

He stood up, smoothing his jacket. "So, here is what we are going to do. You are going to let me quietly resign at the end of the month. I will take a severance package commensurate with my ten years of loyal service to your family. You will quietly fix the payroll issue out of your own pocket, and we will never speak of this again. It’s just business."

I sat in silence for a moment, letting his words hang in the air. He thought he had me cornered. He thought my fear of a corporate scandal and my desire to protect my mother would make me complicit in his crime. He underestimated what happened to me when someone tried to leverage my family against me.

"You're right about one thing, Arthur," I said, standing up to meet his gaze. "It is just business."

I reached over and pressed a button on my desk phone. "David, bring Rosa and her daughter up to my office. And call the city police department. Tell them we have an active case of identity theft, fraud, and embezzlement occurring on the property."

Arthur’s arrogance finally flickered. "You're bluffing. You wouldn't risk your mother's reputation."

"My mother is an innocent woman whose identity was stolen by a predator she trusted," I said, walking around the desk until I was standing inches from him. "I will spend ten times the amount you stole on the best defense attorneys in the country to clear her name. But you? You don't have the resources to survive what I am going to do to you in a courtroom."

The office door opened, and David, the head of security, stepped in, followed by Rosa and Camila. Rosa looked terrified, her eyes darting between me and Arthur. Camila, however, kept her chin up, her small hand gripping her mother's skirt.

"Rosa," I said, my voice softening as I addressed her. "I have found the problem with your pay."

I looked directly at Arthur, whose face had gone completely pale.

"Mr. Harrison here is going to help us rectify it immediately."
