Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Boardroom

Forty-eight hours later, the glass tower of Vance Global Enterprises in downtown Los Angeles bustled with activity. The quarterly board meeting was set for 10:00 AM, and the main conference room on the 50th floor was filled with high-profile investors, family representatives, and legal counsel.
At the head of the long glass table sat Uncle Julian. He was sixty-two, with silver hair, a sharp tailor-made suit, and an aura of supreme confidence. He was chatting animatedly with two major shareholders, laughing effortlessly.
I entered the boardroom precisely at 9:55 AM, carrying a leather briefcase.
Julian turned, his smile expanding. "Ah, David! Glad you could make it. We were just discussing the expansion proposal for the European fund. I have all the proxy votes lined up."
"I'm sure you do, Julian," I said smoothly, taking my seat at the opposite end of the table.
"Before we begin the official agenda," Julian said, clearing his throat and shuffling his papers, "I’d like to make a quick motion. As many of you know, David has been managing both the international tech portfolio and the estate accounts. Given his heavy workload, I propose we formally transfer full oversight of the family foundation and estate trust to my office to lighten his burden."
Several board members nodded in agreement.
"That's very generous of you, Julian," I said, opening my briefcase and pulling out a thick binder of documents. "But before we vote on transferring trust oversight, I think the board should review the recent audit of the estate's financial operations."
Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly, but his smile remained fixed. "David, this isn't the forum for domestic accounting details. We have multi-million dollar corporate acquisitions to discuss."
"This is the forum," I replied firmly, pushing copies of the binder down both sides of the table to the board members. "Because the money stolen from my domestic staff didn't stay in the house accounts. It was funneled through Vance Legacy Holdings—a shell company registered under your personal signature."
A collective murmur whispered across the boardroom. Board members began flipping through the pages, their expressions changing from curiosity to shock.

Julian’s face flushed red. He slammed his hand on the table. "This is outrageous! Are you accusing me of financial impropriety over some household bookkeeping mistakes? I supported you after your parents died, David! How dare you bring such slander to this board!"
"It isn't slander, Julian," I said calmly. "It's a forensic paper trail."
