Chapter 9 - A New Dawn
The day of Elena’s official discharge from the clinic arrived on a beautiful, warm autumn afternoon. The leaves of the maple trees had turned brilliant shades of gold and amber, casting a warm glow over the entire estate.
A small gathering had assembled at the Vance family’s new home—a charming, sun-drenched cottage far away from the old chalet, located in a safe, tight-knit community. The old house, with all its dark memories, had been sold, and the funds were used to give the family a completely fresh start.
Miller, Sarah, and Morales stood in the backyard, where a barbecue was sizzling.
Elena walked out of the back door, leaning lightly on a cane, but walking with a steady, confident grace. Thomas held her free hand, his face glowing with pride.
"Look at them," Miller said, taking a sip of his drink. "Six months ago, we thought we were looking at a double homicide. Now look."
"Sometimes, the system actually works," Sarah said softly, watching Sofia run across the lawn, chasing a puppy that Thomas and Elena had adopted for her—a golden retriever named Buddy.
Sofia saw Morales and ran over, Buddy trotting happily at her heels. "Officer Morales! Look! Buddy learned how to sit!"
"Show me," Morales laughed, kneeling down.
Sofia held up a small treat. "Buddy, sit!"
The puppy immediately sat, his tail wagging furiously against the grass. Sofia beamed, hugging the dog tightly.
Elena walked over, her eyes shining with tears of gratitude. She reached out and hugged Morales. It was a long, silent embrace that spoke volumes. No words were needed to express the depth of her thanks.
"Thank you for giving me my family back," Elena whispered.

As the sun began to set, casting long, golden shadows across the lawn, the family sat together at the large wooden picnic table. There were no strange smells, no locked doors, and no lingering fears. The shadows of the past had finally been chased away by the bright, unstoppable light of a new beginning.
